Abstract The nonulosonic acid 8-epipseudaminic was discovered only recently in two Acinetobacter baumannii strains but the genes responsible for conversion of pseudaminic to its 8-epimer were not found at K locus. Here, we use a pan-genome approach identify pair carbohydrate biosynthesis genes, epaA and epaB , demonstrate using NMR analysis capsular polysaccharide that they encode enzymes able convert 8-epimer. Via an extensive survey available A. genomes, show are present 17 different Caudoviricetes class prophages. prophages genomes carry capsule loci from isolates recovered several countries. presence produce leads modification polysaccharides decorate their cell surface with potential implications typing capsule-targeting therapies.
