Coral research is being ushered into the genomic era. To fully capitalize on potential discoveries from this revolution, rapidly increasing number of high-quality genomes requires effective pairing with rigorous taxonomic characterizations specimens and contextualization their ecological relevance. However, to date there no formal framework that genomicists, taxonomists, coral scientists can collectively use systematically acquire link these data. Spurred by recently announced “Coral symbiosis sensitivity environmental change hub” under “Aquatic Symbiosis Genomics Project” - a collaboration between Wellcome Sanger Institute Gordon Betty Moore Foundation generate gold-standard genome sequences for animal hosts associated Symbiodiniaceae microalgae (among sequencing many other symbiotic aquatic species) we outline consensus guidelines reconcile different types The metaorganism nature holobiont provides particular challenge in context key factor consider developing consolidate genomic, taxonomic, (meta)data. Ideally, data should be accompanied references, i.e., skeletal vouchers as morphological references corals strain case microalgal bacterial symbionts (cultured isolates). exhaustive characterization all member species currently not feasible simply because do have comprehensive understanding organisms constitute holobiont. Nevertheless, minimal, recommended, ideal-case descriptions major constituents (coral animal, microalgae, prokaryotes) will undoubtedly help future referencing facilitate comparative studies. We hope outlined here, which adhere part Aquatic Project sub-hub focused symbioses, useful broader community implementation cross- meta-data comparisons analyses.

The vast majority of environmental microbes have not yet been cultured, and most the knowledge on coral-associated (CAMs) has generated from amplicon sequencing metagenomes. However, exploring cultured CAMs is key for a detailed comprehensive characterization roles these in shaping coral health and, ultimately, their biotechnological use as, example, probiotics other natural products. Here, strategies technologies that used to access are presented, while advantages disadvantages associated with each discussed.

Abstract The application of beneficial microorganisms for corals (BMC) decreases the bleaching susceptibility and mortality rate corals. BMC selection is typically performed via molecular biochemical assays, followed by genomic screening traits. Herein, we present a comprehensive in silico framework to explore set six putative strains. We extracted high-quality DNA from coral samples collected Red Sea PacBio sequencing. identified traits mechanisms associated with each strain as well proposed new mechanisms, such chemotaxis presence phages bioactive secondary metabolites. prophages two studied strains suggests their possible distribution within bacteria. also detected various metabolites, terpenes, ectoines, lanthipeptides, lasso peptides. These metabolites possess antimicrobial, antifungal, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant activities play key roles health reducing effects heat stress, high salinity, reactive oxygen species, radiation. Corals are currently facing unprecedented challenges, our revised can help select more efficient use studies on microbiome rehabilitation, resilience, restoration.
