Abstract Non-pathogenic fungi are being increasingly recognized for their involvement in biological invasions, where they have the potential to cause ecological and economical harm. One notable example is ectomycorrhizal (EcM) fungus, Suillus luteus , which commonly found co-invading with non-native pines that escaped from commercial pine plantations across Southern Hemisphere. In such selection pressures imposed by novel plants, soil microbes, environmental conditions, as well impoverished assemblages of EcM fungi, may exert particularly strong selective effects contribute driving evolutionary divergence traits. We investigated impact this global co-introduction on biosynthetic gene cluster (BGC) diversity native introduced populations S. . demonstrated higher BGC at both clan levels compared populations. Additionally, we identified a collection unique BGCs 24 highly conserved clans, including two featuring known pathways, within Furthermore, our study confirmed presence three previously clades distinct family (GCF) diversity. Thus, concludes introduction has driven changes its BGCs, underscoring broader implications co-introductions fungal adaptation new environments.

ABSTRACT Soil microorganisms mediate several biological processes through the secretion of natural products synthesized in specialized metabolic pathways, yet functional characterization ecological contexts remains challenging. Using culture-independent metagenomic analyses microbial DNA derived directly from soil samples, we examined potential biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) six bacterial communities distributed along an altitudinal gradient Andes Mountains Atacama Desert. We mined 38 metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) and identified 168 BGCs. Results indicated that most predicted BGCs were classified as non-ribosomal-peptides (NRP), post-translational modified peptides (RiPP), terpenes, which mainly species Acidobacteriota Proteobacteria phyla. Based on BGC composition according to types core genes, MAGs observed, three them with predominance for a single phylum, two also showed specificity sampling site. Comparative accessory genes associations between membrane transporters other protein domains involved metabolism classes cores, such resistance-nodulation-cell division (RND) multidrug efflux pumps RiPPs iron-dependent transporter TonB terpenes. Our findings increase knowledge regarding uncultured bacteria inhabiting pristine locations one oldest driest nonpolar deserts Earth. IMPORTANCE Much what know about metabolites Desert, including Andean ecosystems, comes isolated intended drug development product discovery. To complement research microbes extreme environments, comparative annotations uncultivated carried out. general, encode structurally unique did not show obvious relationship their taxonomy or geographic distribution. Nevertheless, some members phylogenetic specific traits few Desulfobacterota exhibited niche adaptations. results emphasize studying environmental samples may significantly contribute elucidation structures, activities, roles molecules.
