Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the primary causes mortality and disability, with arterial blood pressure being an important factor in clinical management TBI. Spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs), widely used as a model essential hypertension vascular dementia, demonstrate dysfunction hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis, which may contribute to glucocorticoid-mediated hippocampal damage. The aim this study was assess acute post-TBI seizures, delayed mortality, pathology SHRs normotensive Sprague Dawley (SDRs). Male adult SDRs were subjected lateral fluid-percussion injury. Immediate seizures video recorded, corticosterone (CS) measured plasma throughout study, morphology assessed 3 months post-TBI. Acute remote survival rates significantly higher compared (overall 0% 58%, respectively). seizure duration predicted but not mortality. TBI did affect CS SHRs, while level transiently elevated SDRs, predicting Neuronal cell loss polymorph layer ipsilateral dentate gyrus found both thinning pyramidal granular layers strain- area-specific. No effects on density astrocytes or microglia revealed. possess unique resilience SDRs. show shorter immediate reduced response injury, suggesting development long-term adaptative mechanisms associated chronic hypertension. Though post-traumatic damage obvious data imply that physiological adaptations high be protective, preventing TBI-induced neurodegeneration. Understanding also help improve recommendations for patients Limitation: since more than half prolonged days after have died, survivorship bias might hamper correct interpretation data.
