This study focused on the investigation of soil samples from alluvial zone Sava River, located near heating plant in New Belgrade, Serbia. Using gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID), a broad range alkanes, including linear n-alkanes (C10 to C33) and isoprenoids, was analyzed all samples. The obtained datasets were effectively made simpler by applying multivariate statistical analysis. Various geochemical indices (CPI, ACL, AI, TAR, etc.) ratios (S/L, Paq, Pwax, calculated used distinguish between biogenic anthropogenic contributions. approach added higher level precision source identification hydrocarbons provided detailed characterization investigated soil. results showed that topsoil had high content TPH (average value, 90.65 mg kg−1), potentially related an accidental oil spill occurred repeatedly over extended periods. uncommon n-alkane profiles reported for are probably result inputs sources, emphasizing petroleum main short-chain n-alkanes. methodology developed this proven be efficient assessment environmental quality urban part but it can also useful tool monitoring pollution other (sub)urban areas.

Petroleum and petrochemical hydrocarbons for some places are serious sources of environmental pollutants. To remediate these contaminants, phytoremediation, a relatively low cost an friendly technique is recommended more widely, now than ever. Successful effective applying phytoremediation depends mainly on the soil plant types conditions microbial activities interactions between three factors. Although last several decades, various organism’s species processes have been extensively studied, evaluating characterizing properties, as important objective sustainable remediation land use management, which had negligible considerations. An ideal should proper physical, chemical biological characteristics to let grow well produce biomass high possible. It also provide favorable perform efficient remediation. Soil physical such texture, structure, water status aeration factors affecting consequently degree potential. A better understanding properties in conjunction with soil-plant-microbe management could be exploited enhance hydrocarbon contaminated soils thus healthy environment.   Key words: Phytoremediation, petroleum, hydrocarbon.
