The role of playgrounds in promoting children’s health – a scoping review

Abstract
Background
Active
outdoor
play
is
important
for
children’s
health
and
development,
playgrounds
provide
good
places
play.
However,
the
importance
of
playground
use
well-being
unclear.
Our
scoping
review
aims
to
create
an
overview
all
research
on
benefits
children.
Methods
Scopus,
Web
Science,
SportDiscus,
PsycInfo
were
searched
using
two
search
blocks,
focusing
'playground'
'children'
respectively,
publications
from
2000
November
2023.
The
primary
inclusion
criterion
was
examining
relationship
between
positive
physical,
mental,
or
social
outcomes.
Only
papers
published
in
English
reviewed.
For
each
publication,
we
synthesized
condensed
results,
categorizing
them
by
setting,
reported
outcome,
participant
age
group,
study
design,
methodologies,
publication's
country,
year,
‘stage
evidence’.
Results
Data
247
studies
extracted
nearly
80%
these
descriptive
exploratory
studies.
Fifty-two
intervention
Adding
markings
schoolyards
led
increased
physical
activity.
Greening
had
mainly
effects
mental
health.
In
Early
Childhood
Education
Care,
renewing
structures
a
effect
activity
three
publications.
All
Public
Open
Space
interventions
found

Introduction
Increasing
physical
activity
(PA)
levels

Abstract
For
population-wide

disseminated

adopted
at
scale.
Research–practice
partnerships

TransformUs
is
a
school-based
physical
activity
sedentary
behaviour
program,

2018,

their
