ABSTRACT Introduction Interpretations of ‘recovery’ from illness are complex and influenced by many factors, not least patient expectations experiences. This paper examines meanings ‘recovery’, how it is strived towards, drawing on the example COVID‐19 infection. Methods Drawing qualitative interviews ( n = 93) conducted in UK between February 2021 July 2022, we compare adults' accounts being admitted to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with ill Long COVID, defined as ongoing symptoms for at 12 weeks postinfection. We a multi‐stage comparative analysis using Nvivo organise code data. Results identified similarities differences participants' descriptions their ‘worlds illness’. For both groups, perceptions recovery were shaped novel, unknown nature COVID‐19.
