Incorporating local farmers' perceptions into conservation management has great significance because they have become the key stakeholders in wildlife conservation, especially that of waterbirds. The Black-necked Crane (Grus nigricollis) interacts closely with farmers throughout its distribution, resulting human–bird conflict. evaluation ecosystem services/disservices among populations should help to address this relationship. We examined agreement services and disservices provided by one large wintering sites conducting semi-structured interviews around Caohai Wetland Guizhou Province, China. influences socio-demographic variables, ecological knowledge, attitude on were explored generalized linear mixed models. Most perceived a few benefits from Crane, whereas approximately one-third them regarded species as harmful. most mentioned service was aesthetic value, followed leisure ecotourism, therapeutic while crop consumption commonly disservice. Their levels associated age, those determined education attainment household size. Local government organizations could use social media platforms, such TikTok WeChat, convey information or black-necked crane, compensation be implemented alleviate farmer–bird This study demonstrated inclusion management. framework can applied other protected ecosystems facing similar situations.

Humans mistreating, exploiting, and abusing animals is a common problem in our society related to speciesism. Speciesism refers when humans assign different worth beings based on their species. A way used by animal activists reduce harmful behaviors toward involves showing people illustrations of situations which are harmed but where the roles reversed. It unclear, however, whether this intervention successful reducing speciesist attitudes animals. As may increase awareness treatment animals, perspective-taking, feelings associated with injustice we expected it speciesism compared control condition. In two studies (nStudy1 = 231 nStudy2 399), participants either watched or did not watch video take role nonhuman vice versa. Participants' attitudes, behavioral intentions, responses were measured. Studies 1 2 showed that condition more strongly intended (in)directly behavior than those Feelings mediated effect (Study 2). There no effects attitude responses. The shows promise as change behavior. Reasons for why changed intentions discussed.

In the digital age online platforms provide new models of engagement between science and society. Garnering sufficient involvement in conservation relies largely on communicating aims findings research projects. Here, role social media understanding ecology an elusive wildcat, caracal (Caracal caracal), Cape Town, South Africa is explored. There has been sustained growth Urban Caracal Project's following since its inception 2014 (>16,800 followers Facebook; > 7,300 Instagram). The public made valuable contributions to core aims, including reporting sightings mortalities. Encounters with Town's caracals are positive experiences revealing attitudes care for species. Social a launchpad other forms engagement, enhancing project's scientific outreach reputation. success appeal likely stems from phenomenon "cats internet," relying use domestic cats popular meme culture. Using aesthetic species, such as caracal, effective way capture attention communicate importance conserving urban wildlife. These highlight smaller carnivores flagship species rapidly urbanizing areas.

Abstract Cultural data is a powerful tool to analyze public awareness of key societal issues, including the conservation nature. I used two publicly available repositories cultural data, Google Trends and Ngram, quantify effect International Union for Conservation Nature (IUCN) Red List status on attention toward 4539 mammal species. With Trends, calculated whether searches their common scientific names have been increasing or decreasing over time. also ran an anomaly detection analysis investigate change in red‐list directly results increase searches. Additionally, quantified mentions species’ English texts with Ngram. Overall, most species remained at similar levels increased since 2008. The severity IUCN was significant predictor searches, although size relatively small. Red‐list seemed strongly confounded body size. Species that moved higher‐risk category spiked significantly after new designation. mention Ngram's 2019 corpus as increased. These provide valuable insight into importance usefulness examining effectiveness specific efforts thus evaluating targets support funding.

Introduction To sustain black bear (Ursus americanus) populations, wildlife managers should understand the coupled socio-ecological systems that influence acceptance capacity for bears. Method In a study area encompassing portion of New York State, we spatially matched datasets from three sources: human-bear conflict reports between 2006 and 2018, estimates local density in 2017–2018, responses to 2018 property owner survey (n=1,772). We used structural equation modeling test hypothesized relationships conflict, density, psychological variables. Results The final model explained 57% variance acceptance. effect population on bears was relatively small mediated by third variable: perception proximity effects interactions. variables exerted direct were bear-related benefits, risks, perceived interactions, being hunter. Perception benefits had greater than risks. Perceived interactions affected but also social trust. Increased trust nearly same as decreased density. Social greatest indirect any variable model. Discussion Findings suggest agencies could maintain public through an integrated approach combines actions address perceptions along with active management populations.
