The Neurophysiological Paradox of AI-Induced Frustration: A Multimodal Study of Heart Rate Variability, Affective Responses, and Creative Output

efficiencies
on
the
one
hand
and
prompting
concerns
about
psychological
neurophysiological
strain

This
study
employed
a
multimodal
approach
to
examine
affective,
autonomic,
consequences
of
AI-assisted
coding
early-stage
learners.
Fifty-eight
undergraduate
design
students
with
no
formal
programming
experience
were
randomly
assigned
either
an
group
or
control
engaged
two-day
generative
task.
Emotional
states
(PANAS),
self-efficacy
(CSES),
subjective
workload
(NASA-TLX)
assessed,
alongside
continuous
monitoring
heart
rate
variability
(HRV;
RMSSD
LF/HF).
Compared
controls,
exhibited
greater
increases
negative
affect
(p
=
0.006),
reduced
parasympathetic
activity
during
task
0.001),
significant
post-task
declines
<
0.05).
Expert
evaluation
outputs
revealed
significantly
lower
performance

corroborated
by
behavioral
observations
showing
higher
tool
dependency,
emotional
volatility,
rigid
problem-solving
strategies.
These
findings
indicate
that,
novice
users,
opacity
unpredictability
feedback
may
disrupt
regulation
autonomic
balance,
thereby
undermining
engagement.
The
results
highlight
need
consider
neurocognitive
vulnerability
learner’s
developmental
stage
when
integrating
tools
into
cognitively
demanding
workflows.
