Environmental reclamation of Canada's oil sands tailings ponds is among the single largest water treatment challenges globally. The toxicity process-affected (OSPW) has been associated with its dissolved organics, a complex mixture naphthenic acid fraction components (NAFCs). Here, we evaluated solar buoyant photocatalysts (BPCs) as passive advanced oxidation process (P-AOP) for OSPW remediation. Photocatalysis fully degraded acids (NAs) and extractable organics (AEO) in 3 different samples. However, classical NAs AEO, traditionally considered principal toxicants OSPW, were not correlated herein. Instead, nontarget petroleomic analysis revealed that low-polarity organosulfur compounds, composing <10% total apparently accounted majority waters' to fish, described by model tissue partitioning. These findings have implications release, which less extensive but more selective may be required than previously expected.

The composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) directly affects the biological degradation processes and its persistence in aquatic systems. Spring floods export large amounts DOM from land into systems, yet lability remains largely unknown. This study uniquely investigates biodegradation during critical winter-to-spring transition seasonally ice-covered marsh lake environments. We employed a four-bacteria strain inoculum ( Arthrobacter phenanthrenivorans , Bacillus licheniformis Exiguobacterium sibiricum Paracoccus denitrificans) to degrade collected this period. Using advanced optical molecular characteristics techniques, we demonstrated significant bioalteration at low temperatures (4°C), which are naturally associated with early spring cold temperate lakes wetlands. Despite limited colored fluorescent (CDOM FDOM, respectively), 84% mass-to-charge (m/z) peaks detected using positive ion mass spectrometry were lost winter after 28-day incubation. Biodegradation ranged 74% 77% freshet, lowest microbial alteration observed downstream end melt season, likely due increased primary production. These findings highlight role transformation periods rapid hydrological change, providing insights carbon cycling ecosystem dynamics

The current state-of-the-art analysis techniques for petroleum fractions has progressed substantially during the past decade. This helped to further improve lumping procedures and modeling approaches of these complex systems. Recent advances in gas chromatography (GC), GC-field ionization mass spectrometry (GC-FIMS), comprehensive (GC×GC) have made it possible determine compositions with up 45 carbon atoms some cases C80. combination MS other selective detectors reversed-phase column combinations quantify even traces heteroatomic compounds hydrocarbon matrices.
