Groundwater deterioration due to enrichment with contaminants of either geogenic or anthropogenic origin has adversely affected safe water supply for drinking and irrigation, pervasive impacts on human health ecosystem functions. However, the spatiotemporal evolution public effects groundwater quality remain unclarified, posing a grand challenge sustainable global resources. This article provides state-of-the-art review complexity dynamics quality, as well various substances health. In particular, knowledge is growing about key ranging from nutritional elements (e.g., Ca 2+ , Mg ) pollutants heavy metals/metalloids, persistent organic pollutants, emerging contaminants) and, further, pathogenic microorganisms which body can be exposed through multiple patterns use. Proliferating concerns at same time call enhancing science-based governance directives, economic policies, management strategies coordinating quality. We propose that safeguarding groundwater-dependent needs concerted efforts in source control, cross-scale rehabilitation, social hydrology-based governance.

Freshwater connectivity and the associated flow regime are critical components of health freshwater ecosystems. When ecosystems fragmented, movements flows species, nutrients, sediments, water altered, changing natural dynamics The consequences these changes include declines loss species populations ecosystems, alterations in delivery certain ecosystem services, such as fisheries, buffering flood events, healthy deltas, recreational cultural values, others. Measures exist that can maintain restore or mitigate against its face constructed barriers other habitat alterations. These measures system-scale planning for energy resources includes options limiting connectivity; putting place protections keeping critically important habitats connected; mitigating impacts on via barrier design, fish passage, implementation environmental flows; restoring freshwaters removal reconnection rivers, wetlands, floodplains active management groundwater recharge. We present case studies applied Europe, Asia, Africa, Americas reflect next generation innovation needed to further enhance advance restoration protection mitigation impacts.

Abstract Groundwater is a vital ecosystem of the global water cycle, hosting unique biodiversity and providing essential services to societies. Despite being largest unfrozen freshwater resource, in period depletion by extraction pollution, groundwater environments have been repeatedly overlooked conservation agendas. Disregarding importance as an ignores its critical role preserving surface biomes. To foster timely groundwater, we propose elevating concept keystone species into realm ecosystems, claiming that influences integrity many dependent ecosystems. Our analysis shows over half land areas (52.6%) has medium‐to‐high interaction with reaching up 74.9% when deserts high mountains are excluded. We postulate intrinsic transboundary features for shifting perspectives towards more holistic approaches aquatic ecology beyond. Furthermore, eight key themes develop science‐policy integrated agenda. Given ecosystems above below ground intersect at levels, considering component planetary health pivotal reduce loss buffer against climate change.

Abstract Many countries have experienced the increase of groundwater depletion rate (GWDR), posing great challenges to environment and society. Given slow variation groundwater, long‐term estimation GWDR at high‐resolution is critical for sustainable managements regional water resources risks hydrological extremes in a changing climate. However, limited in‐situ satellite observations uncertainties from model simulations prohibit reliable trend inter‐annual GWDR. Using survey‐based withdrawal availability datasets, this study provided spatially distributed annual over China 0.25° × grid scale period 1965–2016 using flux‐based approach. The estimated has higher spatial resolution longer temporal coverage than previous products. With newly compiled data, we found that was depleted an average 20.4 km 3 year −1 during 1965–2016, especially arid semi‐arid areas northern China. showed significant increasing but such slowed down 0.66 1965–2001 0.06 2001–2016, which mainly attributed deceleration human withdrawal. Further analysis 40% variability could be explained by precipitation variability, climate control increased time. This suggested growing variations on as been decelerating, need change adaptation management.
