Groundwater
deterioration
due
to
enrichment
with
contaminants
of
either
geogenic
or
anthropogenic
origin
has
adversely
affected
safe
water
supply
for
drinking
and
irrigation,
pervasive
impacts
on
human
health
ecosystem
functions.
However,
the
spatiotemporal
evolution
public
effects
groundwater
quality
remain
unclarified,
posing
a
grand
challenge
sustainable
global
resources.
This
article
provides
state-of-the-art
review
complexity
dynamics
quality,
as
well
various
substances
health.
In
particular,
knowledge
is
growing
about
key
ranging
from
nutritional
elements
(e.g.,
Ca
2+
,
Mg
)
pollutants
heavy
metals/metalloids,
persistent
organic
pollutants,
emerging
contaminants)
and,
further,
pathogenic
microorganisms
which
body
can
be
exposed
through
multiple
patterns
use.
Proliferating
concerns
at
same
time
call
enhancing
science-based
governance
directives,
economic
policies,
management
strategies
coordinating
quality.
We
propose
that
safeguarding
groundwater-dependent
needs
concerted
efforts
in
source
control,
cross-scale
rehabilitation,
social
hydrology-based
governance.

Freshwater
connectivity
and
the
associated
flow
regime
are
critical
components
of
health
freshwater
ecosystems.
When
ecosystems
fragmented,
movements
flows
species,
nutrients,
sediments,
water
altered,
changing
natural
dynamics
The
consequences
these
changes
include
declines
loss
species
populations
ecosystems,
alterations
in
delivery
certain
ecosystem
services,
such
as
fisheries,
buffering
flood
events,
healthy
deltas,
recreational
cultural
values,
others.
Measures
exist
that
can
maintain
restore
or
mitigate
against
its
face
constructed
barriers
other
habitat
alterations.
These
measures
system-scale
planning
for
energy
resources
includes
options
limiting
connectivity;
putting
place
protections
keeping
critically
important
habitats
connected;
mitigating
impacts
on
via
barrier
design,
fish
passage,
implementation
environmental
flows;
restoring
freshwaters
removal
reconnection
rivers,
wetlands,
floodplains
active
management
groundwater
recharge.
We
present
case
studies
applied
Europe,
Asia,
Africa,
Americas
reflect
next
generation
innovation
needed
to
further
enhance
advance
restoration
protection
mitigation
impacts.

Abstract
Groundwater
is
a
vital
ecosystem
of
the
global
water
cycle,
hosting
unique
biodiversity
and
providing
essential
services
to
societies.
Despite
being
largest
unfrozen
freshwater
resource,
in
period
depletion
by
extraction
pollution,
groundwater
environments
have
been
repeatedly
overlooked
conservation
agendas.
Disregarding
importance
as
an
ignores
its
critical
role
preserving
surface
biomes.
To
foster
timely
groundwater,
we
propose
elevating
concept
keystone
species
into
realm
ecosystems,
claiming
that
influences
integrity
many
dependent
ecosystems.
Our
analysis
shows
over
half
land
areas
(52.6%)
has
medium‐to‐high
interaction
with
reaching
up
74.9%
when
deserts
high
mountains
are
excluded.
We
postulate
intrinsic
transboundary
features
for
shifting
perspectives
towards
more
holistic
approaches
aquatic
ecology
beyond.
Furthermore,
eight
key
themes
develop
science‐policy
integrated
agenda.

Abstract
Many
countries
have
experienced
the
increase
of
groundwater
depletion
rate
(GWDR),
posing
great
challenges
to
environment
and
society.
Given
slow
variation
groundwater,
long‐term
estimation
GWDR
at
high‐resolution
is
critical
for
sustainable
managements
regional
water
resources
risks
hydrological
extremes
in
a
changing
climate.
However,
limited
in‐situ
satellite
observations
uncertainties
from
model
simulations
prohibit
reliable
trend
inter‐annual
GWDR.
Using
survey‐based
withdrawal
availability
datasets,
this
study
provided
spatially
distributed
annual
over
China
0.25°
×
grid
scale
period
1965–2016
using
flux‐based
approach.
The
estimated
has
higher
spatial
resolution
longer
temporal
coverage
than
previous
products.
With
newly
compiled
data,
we
found
that
was
depleted
an
average
20.4
km
3
year
−1
during
1965–2016,
especially
arid
semi‐arid
areas
northern
China.
showed
significant
increasing
but
such
slowed
down
0.66
1965–2001
0.06
2001–2016,
which
mainly
attributed
deceleration
human
withdrawal.
Further
analysis
40%
variability
could
be
explained
by
precipitation
variability,
climate
control
increased
time.
This
suggested
growing
variations
