Measures adopted to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and economic shocks caused by pandemic have affected food networks globally, including wild meat trade that support livelihoods security millions people around world. In this article, we examine how COVID-related vulnerability coping strategies different actors along networks. Informed 1,876 questionnaires carried out with hunters, traders, vendors, consumers in Cameroon, Colombia, Democratic Republic Congo (DRC), Guyana, article presents qualitative evidence as impacted segments society involved Our findings largely align McNamara et al. (2020) Kamogne Tagne al.’s (2022) causal model hypothesising impacts could lead a change local incentives for hunting sub-Saharan African countries. Like (2022), find reduced availability urban areas while increasing reliance on subsistence purposes rural areas. However, some impact pathways be more relevant than others, also incorporate additional into existing model. Based our findings, argue serves an important safety net response We conclude advocating policies development interventions seek improve sustainability protect access environmental strategy during times crisis.

The modern food system is characterized with high environmental impact, which in many cases associated increased rates of animal production and overconsumption. adoption alternatives to meat proteins (insects, plants, mycoprotein, microalgae, cultured meat, etc.) might potentially influence the impact human health a positive or negative way but could also trigger indirect impacts higher consumption rates. Current review provides condensed analysis on potential impacts, resource unintended trade-offs integration alternative complex global form substitutes. We focus emissions greenhouse gases, land use, non-renewable energy use water footprint highlighted for both ingredients used substitutes ready products. benefits limitations substitution are relation weight protein content. recent research literature allowed us define issues, that require attention future studies.

Exploitation of wildlife represents one the greatest threats to species survival according Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services. Whilst detrimental impacts illegal trade are well recognised, legal is often equated being sustainable despite lack evidence or data in majority cases. We review sustainability trade, adequacy tools, safeguards, frameworks understand regulate identify gaps that undermine our ability truly trade. provide 183 examples showing unsustainable a broad range taxonomic groups. In most cases, neither nor supported by rigorous sustainability, with export levels population monitoring precluding true assessments population-level impacts. propose more precautionary approach requires those who profit from proof sustainability. then four core areas must be strengthened achieve this goal: (1) collection analyses populations; (2) linking quotas IUCN international accords; (3) improved databases compliance trade; (4) enhanced understanding bans, market forces, substitutions. Many of the world’s most biodiverse regions are found in poorest and second populous continent Africa; a facing exceptional challenges. Africa is projected to quadruple its population by 2100 experience increasingly severe climate change environmental conflict—all which will ravage biodiversity. Here we assess conservation threats consider how these be affected human growth, economic expansion, change. We then evaluate current capacity infrastructure available conserve continent’s four key questions essential for future African conservation: (1) build societal support efforts within (2) Africa’s education, research, management capacity; (3) finance efforts; (4) through development appropriate approach Africa? While challenges great, ways forward clear, present ideas on progress can made. Given modest address biodiversity crisis, additional international funding required, but estimates cost conserving reach. The act must sympathy that evident Africa, this require building education continent. Considering rapidly growing associated huge needs, options other than need more effectively explored. Understanding the effectiveness of Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) is critical to addressing international environmental issues. Here we articulate implied theory change (ToC) underpinning design and operation CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species Wild Fauna Flora), based an analysis Convention’s documented evolution. We use this as a framework critically evaluate Convention, with respect its stated aims, using range theoretical empirical insights. Although achieving success various ways, proving ineffective at deterring illegal and/or unsustainable exploitation many listed species for trade, which attribute implementation compliance issues design, including principal focus deterrence through state-led law enforcement. Informed by develop modified ToC could support more effective CITES. This intended application level incorporates in-depth examination social-ecological systems (SESs) within are harvested, used, traded. species-system explicitly considers formal informal institutions, institutional diagnostics inform potential revisions arrangements along supply chains. argue that taking approach when considering whether how implement trade measures under enhance these reducing overexploitation legal, traceable, ecologically socially sustainable wild species. Finally, highlight role play broader global biodiversity governance regime; better alignment other relevant MEAs lead conservation overall.

Africa boasts high biodiversity while also being home to some of the largest and fastest-growing human populations. Although current environmental footprint is low compared other continents, population estimated at around 1.5 billion inhabitants, representing nearly 18% world’s total population. Consequently, Africa’s rich under threat, yet only 19% landscape 17% seascape are any form protection. To effectively address this issue align with Convention on Biological Diversity’s ambitious ‘30 by 30’ goal, which seeks protect 30% land oceans 2030, substantial funding conservation measures urgently required. In response critical challenge, as scientists conservationists working in Africa, we propose five recommendations for future directions aimed enhancing betterment African society: (i) accelerate data collection, sharing analytics informed policy decision-making; (ii) innovate education capacity building generations; (iii) enhance expand protected areas, ecological networks foundational legal frameworks; (iv) unlock creative channels cutting-edge initiatives; (v) integrate indigenous local knowledge into forward-thinking strategies. By implementing these recommendations, believe can make significant strides towards preserving its unique biodiversity, fostering a healthier society, contributing global efforts. Abstract Hunting wild animals for food and income, which is pervasive across tropical regions, drives biodiversity loss. Interventions to promote sustainable meat harvesting require information on hunter behavior. Here we monitored the hunting activities of 33 hunters in SE Nigeria over three years (1,106 hunter-months) identify correlates (a) probability initiating a trip any given day; (b) success – whether an animal was caught, if so, how many; (c) carcass price. We found higher during periods with bright moon phases peak agriculture season. Hunters were more likely catch at least one when there less rainfall shorter trips. However, among successful trips, number caught increased duration. Taken together, these results suggest set themselves minimum target not returning empty-handed rather than optimally adjusting their effort. Lastly, price per kilogram species’ its palatability but decreased mass, fall observed be greater rarely smaller-bodied frequently animals. Our provide deeper insights into behavioral plasticity hunters.
