Microbial communities are at the heart of all ecosystems, and yet microbial community behavior in disturbed environments remains difficult to measure predict. Understanding drivers stability, including resistance (insensitivity disturbance) resilience (the rate recovery after is important for predicting response disturbance. Here, we provide an overview concepts stability that relevant communities. First, highlight insights from ecology useful defining measuring stability. To determine whether general disturbance responses exist communities, next examine representative studies literature investigated press (long-term) pulse (short-term) disturbances a variety habitats. Then discuss biological features individual microorganisms, populations, may govern overall We conclude with thoughts about unique systems perspectives - informed by meta-omics data

Since the colonization of land by ancestral plant lineages 450 million years ago, plants and their associated microbes have been interacting with each other, forming an assemblage species that is often referred to as a "holobiont." Selective pressure acting on holobiont components has likely shaped plant-associated microbial communities selected for host-adapted microorganisms impact fitness. However, high densities detected tissues, together fast generation time more ancient origin compared host, suggest microbe-microbe interactions are also important selective forces sculpting complex assemblages in phyllosphere, rhizosphere, endosphere compartments. Reductionist approaches conducted under laboratory conditions critical decipher strategies used specific cooperate compete within or outside tissues. Nonetheless, our understanding these shaping communities, along relevance host health natural context, remains sparse. Using examples obtained from reductionist community-level approaches, we discuss fundamental role (prokaryotes micro-eukaryotes) community structure health. We provide conceptual framework illustrating among microbiota members establishment maintenance host-microbial homeostasis.

Summary Discovering a core microbiome is important for understanding the stable, consistent components across complex microbial assemblages. A typically defined as suite of members shared among consortia from similar habitats, and represented by overlapping areas circles in Venn diagrams, which each circle contains membership sample or habitats being compared. Ecological insight into microbiomes can be enriched 'omics approaches that assess gene expression, thereby extending concept beyond taxonomically to community function behaviour. Parameters traditional ecology theory, such composition, phylogeny, persistence connectivity, will also create more portrait advance role key microorganisms functions within ecosystems.

Biotic and abiotic surfaces in marine waters are rapidly colonized by microorganisms. Surface colonization subsequent biofilm formation development provide numerous advantages to these organisms support critical ecological biogeochemical functions the changing environment. Microbial surface association also contributes deleterious effects such as biofouling, biocorrosion, persistence transmission of harmful or pathogenic microorganisms their genetic determinants. The processes mechanisms well key players among surface-associated microbiota have been studied for several decades. Accumulating evidence indicates that specific cell-surface, cell-cell, interpopulation interactions shape composition, structure, spatiotemporal dynamics, microbial communities. Several mechanisms, including (i) surface, population, community sensing signaling, (ii) intraspecies interspecies communication interaction, (iii) regulatory balance between cooperation competition, identified lifestyle. In this review, recent progress study is synthesized discussed. Major gaps our knowledge remain. We pose questions targeted investigation surface-specific community-level features, answers which would advance understanding ecology communities at levels from molecular mechanistic details through systems biological integration.

This review focuses on interactions among plants, mycorrhizal fungi, and bacteria, testing the hypothesis whether mycorrhizas can be defined as tripartite associations. After summarizing main biological features of mycorrhizas, we illustrate different types interaction occurring between fungi from loosely associated microbes to endobacteria. We then discuss, in context nutritional strategies, mechanisms that operate members consortium often promote plant growth. Release active molecules, including volatiles, physical contact partners seem important for establishment bacteria/mycorrhizal fungus/plant network. The potential involvement quorum sensing Type III secretion systems is discussed, even if exact nature complex interspecies/interphylum remains unclear.

Abstract The importance of microbial communities (MCs) cannot be overstated. MCs underpin the biogeochemical cycles earth’s soil, oceans and atmosphere, perform ecosystem functions that impact plants, animals humans. Yet our ability to predict manage function these highly complex, dynamically changing is limited. Building predictive models link MC composition a key emerging challenge in ecology. Here, we argue addressing this requires close coordination experimental data collection method development with mathematical model building. We discuss specific examples where model–experiment integration has already resulted important insights into structure. also highlight research questions still demand better experiments models. such needed achieve significant progress understanding dynamics function, make practical suggestions as how could achieved.
