While interoception is of major neuroscientific interest, its precise definition and delineation from exteroception continue to be debated. Here, we propose a functional distinction between based on computational concepts sensor-effector loops. Under this view, the classification sensory inputs as serving or depends loop they feed into, for control either bodily (physiological biochemical) environmental states. We explain utility perspective by examining perception skin temperature, one most challenging cases distinguishing exteroception. Specifically, conceptualising thermoception inference about thermal state body (including skin), which directly coupled thermoregulatory processes. This view emphasises coupling regulation (control) defining property (inference) connects contemporary theories brain-body interactions.

Interoception is related to the generation of bodily feelings and awareness ourselves as 'sentient beings', informing organism about its needs guarantee survival. Previous studies have reported links among interoception, emotion processing, mental health. For example, alignment interoceptive dimensions (i.e., accuracy, sensibility, awareness) can predict emotional symptoms, such anxiety. Here, we aimed investigate relationship between perception a certain type skin-mediated signal, i.e., thermosensation, self-reported depression, anxiety, stress. One hundred seventy participants completed Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21) dynamic thermal matching task, static temperature detection heartbeat counting task. Our results revealed that anxiety depression were on hairy non-hairy skin, respectively: higher was better performance task forearm, while poorer tasks palm. Discrepancies thermosensory accuracy sensibility measures ('trait prediction error') heightened in line with previous studies. No significant correlations found DASS-21 scores accuracy. In conclusion, this study suggests individual differences different areas body are associated depression.
