Respiratory dysfunction in Parkinson's disease (PD) is common and associated with increased hospital admission mortality rates. Central peripheral mechanisms have been proposed PD. To date no systematic review identifies the extent type of respiratory impairments PD compared healthy controls.PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, Web Science, Pedro, MEDLINE, Cochrane Library OpenGrey were searched from inception to December 2021 identify case-control studies reporting measures matched controls.Thirty-nine met inclusion criteria, majority low risk bias across Risk Bias Assessment tool for Non-randomized Studies (RoBANS) domains. Data permitted pooled analysis 26 distinct measures. High-to-moderate certainty evidence impairment was identified vital capacity (standardised mean difference [SMD] 0.75; 95% CI 0.45-1.05; p < 0.00001; I2 = 10%), total chest wall volume (SMD 0.38; 0.09-0.68; 0.01; 0%), maximum inspiratory pressure 0.91; 0.64-1.19; 43%) sniff nasal 0.58; 0.30-0.87; 0%). Lower pressure, tidal volume, voluntary ventilation peak cough flow.Strong supports a restrictive pattern muscle weakness controls. Limited data central inconclusive findings.

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is associated with various deficits in sensing and responding to reductions oxygen availability (hypoxia). Here we summarize the evidence pointing a central role of hypoxia PD, discuss relation dependence pathological hallmarks including mitochondrial dysfunction, dopaminergic vulnerability, alpha-synuclein-related pathology, highlight link cellular systemic sensing. We describe cases suggesting that may trigger Parkinsonian symptoms but also emphasize endogenous systems protect from can be harnessed PD. Finally, provide examples preclinical clinical research substantiating this potential.

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the second most common progressive neurodegenerative characterized by movement disorders due to loss of dopaminergic neurons in ventrolateral region substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc). Apart from cardinal motor symptoms such as rigidity and bradykinesia, non-motor including those associated with respiratory dysfunction are increasing interest. Not only can they impair patients’ quality life but also cause aspiration pneumonia, which leading death among PD patients. This narrative review attempts summarize existing literature on impairments reported human studies, well what newly known studies animal models disease. Discussed not muscle dysfunction, apnea, dyspnea, altered central control, responses hypercapnia hypoxia, how affected pharmacological treatment PD.

Individuals living with neurological conditions often face chronic issues including motor and sensory impairments cognitive deficits. These challenges can lead to significant psychological difficulties, anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress. Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a psychotherapeutic approach which aims enhance flexibility acceptance while promoting behavioural change. Although ACT groups have shown promise in supporting individuals conditions, the evidence on patients' experiences of attending them sparse. This project explored range who had attended group sessions as part routine clinical practice, aim refine future iterations intervention enhancing patient care. Ten individual qualitative semi-structured interviews were carried out data analysed thematically. Three overarching themes emerged from analysis: (1) Initial Barriers Group Attendance Engagement; (2) Building an Environment Acceptance; (3) Developing toolkit. Overall, results showed that led participants develop stronger emotional connectedness, better knowledge their more effective skills, different mindsets regarding condition. Implications for refinement groups, neuropsychological service development, practice are discussed.

Abstract Background The prevalence of respiratory dysfunction in PD is unknown and a better understanding determinants contributing to important facilitate early recognition treatment. Objective To examine the self-reported symptoms among people with PD. Methods In cross-sectional study, we administered self-completed questionnaire sample 939 persons Respiratory was defined as experiencing at least one following symptoms: breathing difficulties, breathlessness/shortness breath, tightening chest, frequent throat clearing, coughing, or coughing difficulties. A principal component analysis (PCA) used define composite constructs dysfunction. association participant-reported assessed using multivariable logistic regression models (with adjustment for pulmonary diseases COVID-19 symptoms). Results overall rate 44% (42% after excluding COVID-19). PCA resulted two dysfunction: ‘dyspnea’ ‘dystussia’ (an impaired cough response), which together explained 68% total variance. Female sex (OR = 1.39), higher BMI kg/m 2 1.04), longer disease duration 1.35), greater rigidity 1.16), previous disease(s) 7.12), anxiety 1.04) were independently associated ‘dyspnea’. Pulmonary 1.81), 2.20), swallowing complaints 1.48), speech 1.02) ‘dystussia’. Conclusions Dyspnea dystussia are common manifestations deserves more awareness clinical practice. proactive screening dyspnea may contribute earlier treatment
