Canadian correctional institutions operate with insufficient staffing levels, leading to occupational stress that negatively affects prisons’ overall functioning as well staff and incarcerated people’s wellness. The literature suggests a direct correlation between levels officer (CO) wellness, but little is known about the nuances of effects forced overtime on COs’ well-being. Drawing job demand–control–support (JDCS) model, our qualitative study examines, through semi-structured interviews federally employed COs in Canada ( n = 93), how health wellness concrete discursive ways. Findings focus relationship shortages, overtime, mental health, perceived lack agency accordance JDCS model. Practical implications potential strategies mediate spaces are discussed.

Introduction The inherent nature of work in correctional services can have negative effects on worker mental health and well-being. Methods current study, a replication, analyzes survey data collected from provincial territorial workers staffed six regions across Canada ( n = 192). Specifically, participants were asked at the end an extensive well-being open-ended question requesting any additional feedback or information. Results Four predominant themes identified data: (1) stigma pertaining to need recognize concerns within services; (2) idea that wear mind body; (3) for better relationships with support supervisors, upper management, ministerial leadership; (4) suggestions improve help sector realize its full potential maximize workplace health. Discussion We discuss implications these findings, emphasis finding ways promote positive organizational cultural change services.

Although incarcerated people best understand their needs and rehabilitative processes, the current study explores how correctional officers (COs) of in custody care to support reentry incarceration experience. Harmonious organizational cultures where staff experience positive mental health outcomes are largely created by managers who practice servant leadership. For many correctional officers, this leadership style is missing from corrections, leading to harmful institutional cultures, and depleted officer health. To determine whether can be improved, a intervention was randomly assigned one jail in Tennessee, while two other jails served as comparisons. Paired samples t-tests linear regression models revealed how improved beliefs about culture, decreased their symptoms of depression, anxiety, burnout. Supplementary Sobel tests indicated the effects on wellness were partially mediated culture perceptions. Purpose Although existing research demonstrates that the health and wellbeing of prison staff is affected by many factors, current academic evidence base for effective support limited. The aim this study was to explore experiences who had been involved in Spark Inside Prison Staff Coaching Programme understand perceived benefits intervention.
