Scholarship in Migration Studies and Forced Refugee recognizes that migration immobility can be the result of various, mixed motivations. Empirical work conceptualizations forced “lifestyle” consider some this complexity. on has also examined motives. Finally, theory development recently begun to incorporate various “non-economic” motivations, mainly into frameworks originally aimed at tackling economic/labor migrations, integrating force and/or environmental factors. However, efforts conceptualize theorize how why motivations overlap or are interrelated (positively negatively) more scant, less explicit, systematic. In paper, I provide a broad systematic taxonomy motivation interrelation. First, describe six main (im)mobility discussed literature—namely economic, labor-related, safety-related, environmental, family-related, related self-fulfillment—organizing them around degree which they driven by extrinsic intrinsic rewards costs. Second, general typology possible ways become “alternative” concurrent with each other, these instances operate individual population levels. Third, examine different fit within three important theories micro-level decision-making literature, exploring points interrelation between mechanisms across analytical perspectives. conclude discussing potential implications integration.

Abstract The relationship between climate, environment, and human mobility is complex as (im)mobility outcomes are influenced by multiple socioeconomic, political, environmental factors. current debate focused on migration an adaptation strategy in the face of climate change but largely ignores immobility aspect, particularly Eastern Hindu Kush where mountain livelihoods strongly dependent local conditions. In this study, we examine interrelations environment drivers communities Lotkuh valley, Chitral, north Pakistan. We employed a mixed methods approach grounded theory to describe change, outcomes. study reveals that (im)mobilities outcome interplay extreme events, livelihoods. primary socioeconomic Forced displacement driven multitude events area. Three critical aspects livelihoods—land resources, crop productivity, livestock farming—are identified significant factors influencing Recurring such floods landslides exacerbate soil erosion loss fertile farmlands, leading food insecurity compelling households resort labor strategy. Conversely, for facing severe income stress depleted economic assets, becomes only viable option due insufficient resources migration.
