ABSTRACT Scholars have extensively written about how convivial cross‐cultural encounters, driven by global mobility, underpin mutual understanding and cosmopolitan aspirations. However, little attention has been paid to encounters that cause friction or require considerable effort bridge differences. This paper centres on conflictual negative experiences of encountering cultural diversity through the lens Global South Fulbright students in Boston area United States. Contested membership: experimental evidence on the treatment of return migrants to mainland China during the COVID-19 pandemic

Pandemics refract sociopolitical tensions within societies and highlight how national belonging hinges on informal performances as much legal status.
