ABSTRACT Scholars have extensively written about how convivial cross‐cultural encounters, driven by global mobility, underpin mutual understanding and cosmopolitan aspirations. However, little attention has been paid to encounters that cause friction or require considerable effort bridge differences. This paper centres on conflictual negative experiences of encountering cultural diversity through the lens Global South Fulbright students in Boston area United States. Pandemics refract sociopolitical tensions within societies and highlight how national belonging hinges on informal performances as much legal status. While return migration has become a common practice institutionalized strategy of state development, little scholarly work probed domestic populations view returnees their claims to membership. Using large-scale, pre-registered online survey experiment deploying give-or-take Dictator Game, this paper leverages the dynamics COVID-19 explore Chinese nationals envision treat returnees.
