Police officers are often the victim of aggression by citizens, which has negative consequences for them and society in general. Therefore, it is important to gain knowledge about related factors. This study examines what extent experiencing as a police officer their patience with citizens use force weapons tools. Two explanations based on victim-offender overlap examined: experiences behavior toward influence each other vs. both have common causes. was conducted basis longitudinal survey among ( N = 693). The results show that including experience. association decreases but does not disappear when causes taken into account, this case socio-demographic work-related characteristics. No direct support found reciprocal influence. Implications suggestions further research described.

There is growing recognition in research and policy of a mental health crisis among Canada’s paramedics but despite this, epidemiological surveillance the problem its infancy. Just weeks before emergence COVID-19 pandemic, we surveyed from single, large, urban paramedic service Ontario, Canada to assess for clinically significant symptoms Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety identify potential risk factors each. In total, received 589 completed surveys (a 97% completion rate) found that 11% met screening criteria PTSD, 15% anxiety, with 1 4 active-duty meeting any three as recently February 2020. adjusted analyses, positive screen varied function employment classification, gender, self-reported resilience, previous experience member service’s peer support team. Our findings position have high rates current illness – likely worsened since onset pandemic. We echo calls researchers policymakers urgent action Canada.

Abstract Police officers demonstrate increased risk of physical and mental health conditions due to repeated prolonged exposure stressful occupational conditions. Occupational stress is broken into two types: operational stress, related the content field duties (e.g., demands); organizational cultural structural contexts interpersonal relationships). Applied police research focuses on physiological activation in tasks as a mechanism explaining non-optimal performance outcomes. However, recent survey-based studies indicate numerous stressors associated with self-reported symptoms. The question whether elicit significant activity remains unknown. current proof-of-concept study tests hypothesis that managers will display reactivity before, during, after engaging reality-based scenarios representative management developed from evidence-based pedagogical approaches. A sample 25 training (7 female, M = 16 +/- 5.3 years experience) completed 5 scenarios, including resolving heated conflict between colleagues, delivering negative feedback subordinate, critical incident command. Significant increases heart rate relative rest were observed during all tasks, anticipation several tasks. Greater reactive longer recovery times.
