Identity formation and possible selves of early career instrumental music teachers: A qualitative study

Teacher
identity

complex

non-linear
evolution

knowledge,

formation,
transformation,
scrutiny

phenomenological
investigation
studied
the
views
12
early
career
instrumental
music
teachers
working
professionally
in
Melbourne,
Australia.
Utilising
possible
selves
theory,
interpretative
analysis
revealed
anxieties
stresses
novice
teacher
experiences,
measuring
up
barrier
breaking
professional
models
relations,
evolving
from
past
present
experiential
encounters.
Current
perceptions
shaped
future
goals
that
were
crafted
through
an
agentic
reality
which
reconciled
their
training,
apriori
experiences
with
existential
positioning
field.
Participants
oscillated
between
values,
attitudes,
learning
reflecting
on
current
episodes
events
how
these
shape
trajectories
provide
vision
role
status.
Findings
suggest
as
dynamic,
holistic
interaction
mediated
across
facets
including
prior
schooling,
ones’
education
experience,
experience
teaching
contexts,
plans
imagined
trajectories.
Implications
are
proposed
for
education,
quality
collaborations
school
employment
destinations

Becoming singular: Musical identity construction and maintenance through the lens of identity process theory

This
study
uses
identity
process
theory
to
understand
the
social–psychological
processes
that
motivate
individuals
construct
an
in

music,
singing,
and
singing
teaching
feature
prominently.

conducted
reflexive
thematic
analysis
of
semi-structured
interviews
with
10
Australian
teachers
(with
average
age
60)
how
they
enacted
principles

maintenance.

my

motivating.
