New technology brings new methodological opportunities. While long limited to face-to-face interviewing, today’s interview researchers can choose from a plethora of options, including email, instant messaging, telephone, and video interviews. Consequently, the issue modes their relative strengths weaknesses has received increased attention. In this article, we take stock existing writings on in qualitative research. Drawing key insights more general theorizing about remote interaction, identify challenge five assumptions modes: (1) that physical copresence ensures better data; (2) have determinate effects interaction; (3) interviewing should seek replicate interviewing; (4) interviews be held constant within each study; (5) is unmediated. We counter assumption with series productive principles advance instead view call mode pluralism, which offers nuanced relational understanding different modes. The article thus helps increase literacy those conducting evaluating research, enhancing likelihood select tools best suited for tasks, reducing chance evaluators dismiss research based prejudice.
