Portfolio career formation in Australia: Implications for higher music education DOI

This article reports findings from a qualitative study undertaken to explore the career trajectories of Australian portfolio musicians including their interactions and engagement with formal, non-formal, informal modes music education. Semi-structured interviews were 18 musicians, selected desire represent musical, cultural, social, gender diversity. The participants exhibited composite or “portfolio” careers, consisting work across multiple domains. investigation revealed that such formation happens in an episodic rather than linear fashion, as opportunity adversity lead diversification. Ongoing theorisation data identified ways which musicians’ diversification is enabled by knowledge skill connections, and, keen awareness intra- inter-personal values, beliefs, personal qualities. By observing construct then draw upon epistemic social foundations laid down both outside formal education, higher education providers may be able better plan enact meaningful curriculum reform for future.
