In this paper, we describe two basic motives for social identification: a drive collective enhancement and epistemic fulfillment (uncertainty reduction). We posit that these are critical understanding one of the fundamental underlying mechanisms identity theory (SIT): positive distinctiveness, which is desire to feel different from better than relevant outgroups. Whereas “positive” was clearly outlined in original intergroup relations, “distinctiveness” became focal point self-categorization theory. Most existing literature treats distinctiveness as single construct; however, argue “distinctive” elements should be treated separate but critically intertwined concepts. suggest direct feature enhancement, outgroup necessary provides information reduce self-uncertainty.
