Sense of Belonging, DFW Reduction, and Student Success: Centering Student Experience in Groups with Ethnographic Methods

Despite
substantial
instructional
attention
to
large-enrollment
university
courses
in
science,
technology,
engineering,
and
mathematics
(STEM),
they
tend
have
high
rates
of
D,
F,
Withdraw
(DFW)
at
the
introductory
level
that
disproportionally
disadvantage
historically
minoritized
underrepresented
students,
such
as
students
identified
women,
low-income,
first-generation,
or
color.
While
postsecondary
institutions
recently
explored
big
data
learning
analytics
drive
their
institutional
student
success
efforts,
well-known
shortfalls
large
STEM
remain.
This
chapter
documents
an
evidence-based
approach
a
large,
R1
midwestern
enriches
robust
infrastructure
with
qualitative
ethnographic
methods.
Applied
gateway
computer
science
course,
these
methods
center
students’
day-to-day
realities,
including
disparate
educational
opportunities,
ways
interrogate
barriers
success.
The
resulting
case
study
describes
our
approach,
it
uncovers,
future
directions
this
work,
how
other
faculty
members
can
apply
lessons
learned
promote
efficacy,
attainment,
equity
courses.

from
course

Efforts
to
improve
student
retention
are
regularly
explored
within
higher
education
literature
and
practice
due
their
status
as
a
noble
aim
shared
by
governments,
universities,
students
themselves.
To
this
end,
students’
sense
of
belonging
has
become
an
increasingly
popular
topic
study
its
comprehensive
links
success.
However,
while
is
understood
binary,
externally
defined
metric,
subjective,
messy,
dynamic.
This
utilises
longitudinal
design
explore
the
changing
relationship
between
belonging,
intention
persist,
eventual
continuation
with
101
first-year
undergraduate
at
two
English
universities.
Regression
analyses

utilised

previous
research
showing
near-perfect
correlation
persist.
Sense

strong
predictor
for
all
time-point
measures
except

findings

Course-based
undergraduate
research
experiences
(CUREs)
have
been
widely
hailed
as
an
innovative
approach
to
engage
students
in
college
coursework
through
exposure
authentic
research,
leading
improved
persistence
and
more
equitable
access
opportunities.
This
article
presents
analysis
of
the
impact
implementing
a
novel
type
CURE
across
biology
curriculum
at
one
public
historically
black
university,
introducing
community
focus
partnership
with
local
nonprofit
organization
working
restore
polluted
river.
The
incorporates

on

identity

belonging
administrative
