Opportunities for Accessible Virtual Reality Design for Immersive Musical Performances for Blind and Low-Vision People

Blind
and
low-vision
(BLV)
individuals
often
face
challenges
in
their
attendance
appreciation
of
musical
performances
(e.g.,
concerts,
musicals,
opera)
due
to
limited
mobility
accessibility
visual
information.
However,
the
emergence
Virtual
Reality
(VR)
based
performance
as
a
common
medium
music
access
opens
up
opportunities
mitigate
enhance
experiences
by
investigating
non-visual
VR
accessibility.
This
study
aims
1)
gain
an
in-depth
understanding
BLV
individuals,
including
preferences,
challenges,
needs
listening
accessing
various
modes
(audio,
video,
on-site
experiences)
2)
explore
that
can
create
for
making
immersive
accessible
people.
Using
mixed-methods
approach,
we
conducted
online
survey
semi-structured
interview
with
102
25
participants,
respectively.
Our
findings
suggest
design
space
non-visually
enabling
them
participate
equally
world
further
created
technology.

on

Purpose
The
current
article
focuses
on
the
experiences
of
live
music
event
attendees
with
visual
impairment
(VI).
It
outlines
factors
which
impact
accessibility
events
and
considers
how
might
be
improved
for
these
individuals.
Design/methodology/approach

from
a
mixed-methods
project
utilising
structured
interview
study
(

=
20)

online
survey

Interview
data
were
analysed
using
Interpretative
Phenomenological
Analysis,
providing
in-depth
insight
into
participants’
