Existing research indicates that social crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic reshaped young people’s sense of self, but little is known about what identities emerging adults construct in their narratives. Following propositions narrative identity and Terror Management Theory, this qualitative study investigated Chinese adults’ construction narratives national outbreak late 2022. Participants were 62 college students invited to share experiences with reflections. Thematic analysis data suggests participants shared a process managing death terror activated which threatened self meanwhile motivated them reconstruct who they are world. Based on meaning-making capacities, disclosed awareness vulnerabilities, adopted temporal perspective storytelling, emphasized interpersonal connections, made meaning out defend against terror. As an outcome narration, conformer–explorer was constructed we proposed dialectical model capture dynamics construction. Although limitations, contributes our understanding functions mortality salience among collectivist cultures during pandemic.

How do emerging adults undergoing identity distress during an adverse collective life event such as the COVID-19 pandemic use social media for coping? This study addressed this question by examining associations of distress, confusion, and synthesis with coping a national, multisite undergraduate sample university students (N = 1257; M age 20; 908 women) in United States. Results indicated that adult college increased reported utilizing frequently coping, socially connecting others alleviating negative emotions. Similarly, experiencing uncertainty (marked greater confusion lower synthesis) using coping. Moreover, findings implied high severity, interference, duration were almost two times more likely than their peers lesser degree to alleviate Implications mental health practitioners working are discussed.
