Adaptive evolution may be influenced by canalization, the buffering of developmental processes from environmental and genetic perturbations, but how this occurs is poorly understood. Here, we explore gene expression variability evolves in diverging hybridizing populations, focusing on Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) Thingvallavatn, a classic case divergence between feeding habitats. We report distinct profiles variance for both coding RNAs microRNAs offspring two contrasting morphs (benthic/limnetic) their hybrids reared common conditions sampled at key points cranial development. Gene substantially affected maternal effects, many genes show biased toward limnetic morph. This suggests that as inferred variance, can rapidly diverge sympatry through multiple pathways, which are associated with dominance patterns possibly biasing evolutionary trajectories mitigating effects hybridization adaptive evolution.

Abstract The interplay between ecological diversification and sexual dimorphism has been largely overlooked in the literature. Sexually dimorphic species which are also undergoing adaptive radiations ideal for filling this knowledge gap. Arctic charr lake Thingvallavatn is one such system: it a sexually recently diverged along benthic-limnetic axis. In long-running common-garden experiment we studied shape variation throughout ontogeny of intra- inter- morph crosses benthic limnetic from lake. We found that differences ecomorphs sexes had genetic component. Prior to onset maturation, were attributable cross type related adaptations niches, i.e., shorter lower jaws rounder snouts evenly protruding pointier limnetic. Reciprocal hybrids showed intermediate, transgressive and/or maternal morphologies. However, after maturation larger morphological occurred than among types. Taken together, our results demonstrate complex dynamic ontogeny, long-term common garden experiments immensely valuable studying dynamics different evolutionary scenarios.

Although most plant species have yet to their extinction risk evaluated for the IUCN Red List, current knowledge of diversity suggests that tens thousands (8%–38% species) are likely remain assessed as Data Deficient (DD). This impacts evaluations overall proportion threatened species, well on setting appropriate priorities biodiversity conservation. One principle causes Deficiency is taxonomic uncertainty: data permitting an List assessment often lacking, because poorly known also taxonomically uncertain. Establishing status DD thus assists in determining whether confusion over this causing evaluation DD. In paper, three separate numerical methods – hierarchical clustering, ordination and phylogenetic were applied independent datasets standardized traits from China order identify, each morphologically similar Non-DD species. Semi-automated analysis morphological disparity quickly identifies which need further research, shared can indicate either potential synonymy or, otherwise, successful adaptations distinct ecological conditions. Extinction assessments phylogenetically could then be informed by habitat preferences, geographic range or population size with traits. Ultimately, determination distance between therefore differences trait space occupied basis future research improved inference conservation priorities, help other accepted, identified being themselves.
