Not much is known about early responses of pelagic fish populations to rapidly increasing nutrient concentrations in originally oligotrophic lakes. Here we report on population parameters a pair ciscoes (Coregonus spp.) exposed accelerating eutrophication the deep (69.5 m) and stratified Lake Stechlin (NE Germany), which total phosphorus (TP) concentration increased from 15 mg m-3 >60 within 10 years. With TP concentrations, lower Secchi depths, declining oxygen deeper water layers, higher phytoplankton zooplankton biomass were observed. Correlation analyses supported strong bottom-up directed effects primary secondary producers, negative quality parameters. Annual hydroacoustic records midwater trawling showed an increase average individual size. There was no temporal trend biomass, but observed cyclic annual fluctuations. Diel vertical migration (DVM) amplitudes declined, primarily by occurrence shallower waters than previous years during daytime. We propose that release density-dependent food limitation, due plankton abundances, resulted sizes for both cisco species, turn increasingly blurs species discrimination because length distributions are longer substantially different. Our data show value long-term lake monitoring including surveys, understand initially subtle changes biotic communities, may precede more drastic potentially irreversible anthropogenic pressures.

Abstract Salmonid (Salmonidae) sympatric diversity is the co‐occurrence, in a lake or river, of two more reproductively isolated populations/subpopulations, phenotypes resulting from phenotypic plasticity. Sympatric populations can arise through allopatric and/or evolution. Subsequently, lineages occur sympatry due to independent colonisation anthropogenic introduction. divergence often driven by feeding opportunities, with segregating as planktivorous, benthivorous and piscivorous ecotypes (“trophic polymorphism”), further segregation occurring depth body size. Subpopulations evolve natal homing where water has discrete spawning areas, phenotypically ecologically cryptic sympatry. Most known populations/phenotypes trout genus Salmo (Eurasian aka brown trout) involve (ferox) lifetime invertivorous trout. Segregation on benthic–limnetic axis been poorly studied Eurasian compared other salmonids but likely commoner than currently described. While three populations/species are recognised Lake Ohrid (Albania/North Macedonia), limited ecological information available there only lakes four described benthic, limnetic trophic segregation: Lough Melvin (Ireland) Loch Laidon (Scotland), latter having identified case profundal benthic populations, possibly absence Arctic charr ( Salvelinus alpinus ) lake. Many thousands waters yet be examined. Some extinct, others vulnerable conservation action being urgently required. This should ideally based populations/conservation units, lack recognition intraspecific units most legislations native range necessitates pragmatic approach, species classification, appropriate, integrative taxonomy. clearly merit status formally classified such if valid previous name not available.

An essential factor for aquatic conservation is genetic diversity or population divergence, which in natural populations reflects the interplay between geographical isolation with restricted gene flow and local evolution of populations. The long geological history Africa may induce stronger among-population divergence lower within-population fish African watersheds. As an example, we studied structure snakehead

Brackish water ecosystems often have high primary production, intermediate salinities, and fluctuating physical conditions therefore provide challenging environments for many of their inhabitants. This is especially true the Baltic Sea, which a large body brackish under strong anthropogenic influence. One freshwater species that able to cope these in northern Sea vendace (Coregonus albula), small salmonid fish. Here, we review current knowledge its ecology fishery this environment. The literature shows that, by competing resources with other planktivores being an important prey range larger species, C. albula plays notable role ecosystem. It also sustains significant fisheries coastal waters Sweden Finland. We identify need better understand populations terms predator-prey interactions, distributions anadromous sea spawning putative (eco)morphs, extent gene exchange between populations, effects climate change on future. The vital rates related to reproduction and survival dictate the resistance persistence of a population under perturbations. Freshwater fishes perform high levels phenotypic plasticity thus these may differ widely between populations temporally within population. Knowledge their ranges enables understanding scope predicting effects environmental stressors. Time series vendace ( Coregonus albula ) catch samples from 22 lakes were applied estimate lake-specific average length-at-age in mature age groups (mS). Assuming an age-at-maturity 2 yr constant length–fecundity relationship, spawning 1 (firstS) (premS, prematurity survival) estimated using life table assuming stable state. length at (L2) varied two-fold populations, <100 – > 200 mm, fecundity approximately eight-fold. Also, mS considerably, <10–70%a −1 . L2 positively associated. premS ∼30-fold among lakes, <0.01 0.2% per yr, being highest with low combined mS. range firstS was even higher, 0.01–2%. This between-lake variability seems occur especially after hatching during first summer. Its level is set by factors external population, e.g. , abundance key predators. Persistence early possible because wide compensation size- fecundity-at-age Early expected decrease due climate change while has its limits, increasing risk local extinctions.

Overexploitation of fisheries is recognized as a major environmental and socioeconomic problem that threats biodiversity ecosystem functioning. Inappropriate management policies fish stocks have been applied consequence inadequate characterization subtle genetic structure in many species. In this study, we aim to assess the extent differentiation vendace ( Coregonus albula ) collected from eight locations Bothnian Bay, northernmost part Baltic Sea. Specifically, test if species forms single panmictic population or divided into several genetically distinct units. We used restriction site-associated DNA sequencing (RAD-seq) identify 21,792 SNPs based on 266 individuals. identified clear pattern between River Kalix other sampling locations, weak structuring samples Swedish Finnish coast. Outlier analysis detected 41 putatively under divergent selection, mainly reflecting divergence samples. The outlier were located within near 25 genes, including voltage-dependent calcium channel subunit alpha-2 (CACNA2D2), cadherin 26 (CDH26) carbonic anhydrase 4-like (CA4) earlier associated with salt-tolerance salinity stress. Our study provides first genome-wide perspective Sea rejects hypothesis panmixia Bay. As such, our work demonstrates power RAD-sequencing detect low but significant relevant for management.
