Many systematic reviews identify support animals or animal assisted activity as a beneficial and standard practice in several medical disciplines for patients (children, adolescents, adults) residents care homes. A variety of are used such dogs, cats, ponies, horses, alpacas, reindeer, penguins, rabbits, tarantulas. Our objective was to explore the evidence regarding effects on further population interest; namely, healthcare staff. We asked question "how do settings affect well-being staff?" As an addendum, we were also interested what - possibly more unique have visited at Christmas time particular. We conducted scoping literature review using PubMed Web Science (search 26 April 2023). RESULTS: Twenty studies (in USA, Australia, Europe; dogs: n = 19; cats: 1) since 2002 included: with biological measures (n 3), longitudinal survey analyses 5), cross-sectional 2), descriptive statistics 10). Overall, activities appear be well-received by staff there not seem negative impacts well-being.Relevant positive avenues research identified. suggests that, but exactly how, benefits staff. Study is limited most being cross-sectional, descriptive, having low participant numbers, mostly only involving dogs. Nonetheless, positive. The potential impacting positively warrants research. It is important to understand the effects of COVID-19 pandemic on animal caregivers and their companion animals in order inform responses future crises. Prior research inconsistent, with benefits companionship believed be overstated. In this scoping review, we searched four electronic databases hand-searched reference lists included studies. Over 4000 citations were found, 122 review. Reflecting pre-COVID literature, quantitative evidence association between psychological well-being during was mixed, numerous positive, negative, null findings reported. Studies highlighted pandemic, reported provide a routine, sense greater purpose, positive distraction from COVID-19, companionship, emotional support. However, participants also concerns about meeting animals' needs, fears catching or spreading virus, financial worries. Concerns what would happen if hospitalized led some delay testing treatment.
