Lifestyle Behaviors of Childhood and Adolescence: Contributing Factors, Health Consequences, and Potential Interventions

In
this
narrative
review,
we
summarized
evidence
from
peer-reviewed
articles,
published
before
February
2024,
that
investigated
lifestyle
behaviors
among
children
(≤12
years)
and
adolescents
(13-18
representing
different
geographic
descents.
These
included
dietary
patterns,
screen
time,
physical
activity,
smoking,
alcohol
consumption,
oral
hygiene,
unsafe
sex,
sleep
duration
quality.
We
documented
the
significant
impacts
of
parental,
school,
sociodemographic
factors
on
adoption
numerous
in
age
category.
Several
health
consequences
could
be
attributed
to
unhealthy
during
childhood
adolescence.
For
example,
poor
habits
can
lead
a
higher
risk
obesity
cardiovascular
disease.
Physical
inactivity
contributes
development
musculoskeletal
psychological
disorders.
Excessive
time
is
associated
with
visual
acuity
problems,
sleep,
behavioral
problems.
Tobacco
use
poses
for
severe
respiratory
diseases.
Risky
sexual
are
related
sexually
transmitted
infections
exposure
violence.
Short
lack
fitness
cognitive
function.
However,
potential
interventions,
such
as
school-based
programs,
community
outreach
initiatives,
national
policies
regulations,
improve
adolescents.

Owing
to
their
vulnerability
public
health
crises,
adolescents'
mental
status,
and
related
risk
factors
in
the
post-pandemic
era
China
require
examination.
This
study
aimed
lay
a
foundation
for
subsequent
interventions
disorder
prevention
among
adolescents.
An
anonymous
online
survey
was
conducted
January
8–18,
2023.
The
comprised
two
parts.

part
collected
personal
information.

included
nine-item
Patient
Health
Questionnaire,
seven-item
Generalized
Anxiety
Disorder
Scale,
Pittsburgh
Sleep
Quality
Index.
Of
50,666
adolescent
participants,
46.8%
displayed
depressive
symptoms,
31.5%
showed
anxiety
47.9%
experienced
difficulties
initiating
sleep
within
30
min,
while
4.9%
manifested
depressive,
anxiety,
insomnia
symptoms
simultaneously.
Chi-square
tests
revealed
significant
variations
prevalence
of
these
conditions
according
age,
sex,
coronavirus
disease-2019
(COVID-19)
infection
family
increased
screen
time
(P
<
0.001).
Logistic
regression
analysis
indicated
heightened
rates
depression,
rural
adolescents,
females,
those
aged
16–18
years,
individuals
with
history
COVID-19,
long
COVID-19
illness,
(all
P
status
adolescents
should
be
taken
seriously,
particularly
that
high
school
students,
use
electronic
screens.
Among
such
efforts,
administrators
strengthen
connection
psychologists,
as
early
identification
intervention
are
important
preventing
crises.
