ABSTRACT Ant nests accommodate a diverse group of strictly associated arthropods. Most these arthropods are seldom observed outside their host nest, emphasizing significant gaps in our knowledge regarding biology. We recorded series field observations lepismatid silverfish (Zygentoma: Lepismatidae) moving usual Messor nest habitat southern Spain and France. illustrate how they move between different locate by closely tracking the foraging trails hosts. Additionally, we confirm prior observation that can follow ants when migrate to new site. Our offer insights into hidden biology intricate interactions specialized arthropod symbionts with hosts within spatial context.

Various animal taxa have specialized to living with social hosts. Depending on their level of specialization, these symbiotic animals are characterized by distinct behavioural, chemical, and morphological traits that enable close heterospecific interactions. Despite its functional importance, our understanding the feeding ecology hosts remains limited. We examined how host specialization silverfish co-habiting ants affects several components ecology. combined stable isotope profiling, assays, phylogenetic reconstruction, microbial community characterization Neoasterolepisma genus a wider nicoletiid lepismatid panel where divergent myrmecophilous lifestyles observed.

Background The intestinal microbiota has co-evolved with the host to establish a stable and adaptive microbial community that is essential for maintaining health facilitating food digestion. Food selection critical factor influencing variations in gut composition, shaping microbiome communities, determining ecological niches of fish. Methods In this study, high-throughput amplicon sequencing 16S rRNA 18S was utilized compare dietary differences between Schizopygopsis microcephalus Ptychobarbus kaznakovi , both collected from same sites Tuotuo River Tongtian River, which are tributaries Yangtze River. We compared structure, diet diversity two fish species using various analytical methods, including LefSe, α-diversity β-diversity analyses. Additionally, we constructed co-occurrence networks determine their correlations. Results discussion alpha results indicated S. exhibited higher feeding P. . Furthermore, beta revealed significant eukaryotic communities species. dominant bacterial phyla included Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Actinobacteriota, Chloroflexi, Verrucomicrobiota; however, Firmicutes significantly more abundant ( P = 0.006), while Actinobacteriota 0.019) at phylum level. primary sources were identified as Streptophyta (54.41%, 77.50%) Cercozoa (8.67%, 1.94%), Bacillariophyta (25.65%) also main constituting major component These suggested occupy distinct niches. To further explore relationship habits, correlations components through networks. This study enhances our understanding co-evolution co-adaptation behaviors sympatric

Abstract We report field observations of the cosmopolitan terrestrial isopod species Porcellionides pruinosus both inside nest and following foraging trails seed harvester ant Messor ebeninus in spring 2022 2023. The isopods either traveled to deeper tunnels or joined trails. density along was as high 60 individuals one 22-m trail. results from 12 preliminary homing assays revealed that distance were displaced did not affect whether they returned Two four introduced into a trail new continued walking on foreign met with minimal aggression ants trail, there no instances guarding observed. presence P. facultative associate M. nests could be driven by need for thermal refuge access subterranean granaries. known ability cue pheromones is plausible mechanism allowing follow benefit behavior needs further investigation. hypothesize path clear obstacles, efficient detection patchy desert food sources.
