By analyzing reconstructed three-dimensional images of retinal bipolar neurons, we show that their dendritic arbors weave through space in a manner generates fractal-like behavior quantified by an ‘effective’ fractal dimension. Examining this along with traditional morphological parameters reveals dependence arbor dimension on the summation lengths arbor’s dendrites. We discuss implications for healthy neurons and also deterioration unhealthy response to diseases.

Poor therapeutic outcomes of antioxidants in ophthalmologic clinical applications, including glutathione during photoreceptor degeneration retinitis pigmentosa (RP), are caused by limited anti-oxidative capacity. In this study, fullerenols synthesized and proven to be highly efficient vitro radical scavengers. Fullerenol-based intravitreal injections significantly improve the flash electroretinogram light/dark transition tests performed for 28 days on rd1 mice, reduce thinning retinal outer nuclear layers, preserve Rhodopsin, Gnat-1, Arrestin expressions photoreceptors. RNA-sequencing, RT-qPCR, Western blotting validate that mitochondrial DNA (mt-DNA)-encoded genes electron transport chain (ETC), such as mt-Nd4l, mt-Co1, mt-Cytb, mt-Atp6, drastically downregulated retinas whereas (n-DNA)-encoded genes, Ndufa1 Atp5g3, abnormally upregulated. Fullerenols thoroughly reverse abnormal mt-DNA n-DNA expression patterns ETC restore function degenerating Additionally, simultaneously repress Flap endonuclease 1 (FEN1)-mediated cleavage leakage via voltage-dependent anion channel (VDAC) pores downregulating transcription Fen1 Vdac1, thereby inactivating downstream pro-inflammatory cGAS-STING pathway. Abstract Background The retinal degenerative diseases retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and atrophic age- related macular degeneration (AMD) are characterized by vision loss from photoreceptor (PR) degeneration. Unfortunately, current treatments for these limited at best. Genetic other preclinical evidence suggest a relationship between inflammation. To further explore this relationship, we tested whether Ibuprofen (IBU), an FDA-approved non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), could promote PR survival function in mouse model of light damage (LD)-induced Methods LD was induced exposing mice to 4000 lx 2–4 hours (h). This retrospective study examines the clinical characteristics and underlying genetic variants that exist in a Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA) patient cohort evaluated at inherited retinal disease (IRD) clinic University of Minnesota (UMN)/M Health System. HK2 and PKM2 are two main regulators of aerobic glycolysis. Photoreceptors (PRs) use glycolysis to produce the biomass necessary for daily renewal their outer segments.
