Today the built environment (or human-made spaces and related infrastructures in which we live, work play) is a vitally important element of our urban-oriented world. Increasingly also see closer focus on long-term 'sustainable urban futures' research, as both academics national international interest groups frame their discourses, policy practice guidance, current research agendas not only best most effective ways transitioning to sustainable future, but recognising inherent complexity existing 'urban systems'. This perspective paper aims trace evolution such thinking, drawing scholarly previous high-level publications from relevant programmes identify key themes commonalities approach. The focuses highlighting importance two interconnected within wider context research: (i) systems' (SUS) (ii) (SUF). In doing this synthesise literature, distil emergent findings range develop an integrated agenda positioned at nexus between these themes, explain what other concepts mean, why they are understand. Adopting 'Global North' South', concludes by emerging lessons challenges for suggests areas future transdisciplinary termed science'.

Recent advances in data science and urban environmental health research utilise large-scale databases (100s – 1000s of cities) to explore the complex interplay characteristics such as city form size, climate, mobility, exposure, impacts. Cities are still hotspots air pollution noise, suffer heat island effects lack green space, which leads disease mortality burdens preventable with better knowledge. Better understanding through harmonising analysing large numbers cities is essential identifying most effective means prevention context dependencies important for policy.

Abstract Attracting and retaining a stable supply of effective teachers is critical to the provision schooling that meets international commitments equity, excellence, inclusion. Initiatives targeting school staff are predicated on accessibility schools for workforce. To this point, empirical impact housing transportation costs education workforce has been relatively poorly understood. Based novel approach describing distribution, our analysis Greater Sydney statistical area in Australia found not only city unaffordable workforce, but unobserved characteristics (e.g., intergenerational wealth, assets, high income housemates) fill cost gap. De-centring individual, we show sustainability fragile should it collapse, consequences would be sudden acute.
