Cells are active mechanical objects: they subject to forces, exert force, and interpret changes in force as biological information. We now understand much about how this occurs at the molecular single-cell level. also appreciate that mechanobiology gains even greater complexity when it operates multicellular level of tissues organisms. Here, cells forces on other within support morphogenesis homeostasis; but these must be accommodated ensure tissue integrity is preserved. Cell-cell adhesion junctions play important roles transmitting, resisting, well detecting coherent tissues. In brief article we consider epithelia adapt stresses, focusing recent developments understanding sources new mechanisms for adherens desmosomes mechanotransduction.
