ABSTRACT Arthropods have integrated digestive and renal systems, which function to acquire maintain homeostatically the substances they require for survival. The cryptonephridial complex (CNC) is an evolutionary novelty in organs gut been dramatically reorganised. Parts of or Malpighian tubules (MpTs) form a close association with surface rectum, are surrounded by novel tissue, perinephric membrane, acts insulate system from haemolymph thus allows tight regulation ions water into out CNC. CNC can reclaim solutes rectal contents recycle these back haemolymph. Fluid flow MpTs runs counter within rectum. It this countercurrent arrangement that underpins its powerful recycling capabilities, represents one most efficient conservation mechanisms nature. CNCs appear evolved multiple times, present some largest evolutionarily successful insect groups including larvae Lepidoptera major beetle lineage (Cucujiformia + Bostrichoidea), suggesting important adaptation. Here we review knowledge remarkable organ gained over past 200 years. We first focus on tenebrionid beetles, in‐depth understanding physiological, structural ultrastructural studies (primarily Tenebrio molitor ), now being extended Tribolium castaneum enabled advances molecular microscopy approaches established species. These recent beginning illuminate development, physiology endocrine control. then take broader view arthropod CNCs, phylogenetically mapping their reported occurrence assess distribution likely origins. explore ecological viewpoint, put forward evidence may primarily be adaptations facing challenges larval life, argue loss many aquatic species could point primary conserving terrestrial Finally, considering functions epithelia insects lacking as well typical architecture relation another, propose ancestral features predispose them evolution CNCs.
