Abstract For many evolutionary biologists, fitness differences cause trait frequency changes in populations, and natural selection explains the evolution of adaptations. Treating as a cause, however, is more scientific convention rather than decree, analyses causes potentially afford richer explanations. Unfortunately, historical assumptions that complexities development leave origins phenotypic variation unpredictable, ecological processes are idiosyncratic, have hindered detailed analysis developmental bases selection. A poorly appreciated consequence explanations reliant on mask particular causal patterns important evolution. Here, using examples environmental modification regulation by organisms (‘niche construction’, a.k.a. ‘ecosystem engineering’), plastic responses to conditions (‘phenotypic plasticity’), I will highlight how activities create biases co‐determine nature response selection, an often surprisingly well‐regulated manner. Niche construction exposed generating axes covariation with plastically expressed morphological traits. Taxonomically shared mechanisms aggregate across populations generate statistical regularities easy miss because not currently central study Recent theory experiments suggest develop what do strengthen relationship between key traits fitness, thereby part‐determining characteristics The findings implications for understanding parallel evolution, macroevolutionary trends evolvability.

Abstract Many symbionts are sexually transmitted and impact their host's development, ecology, evolution. While the significance of that cause diseases (STDs) is relatively well understood, prevalence potential sexual transmission mutualists remain elusive. Here, we study effects mutualist nematodes on dung beetle hosts. Symbiotic Diplogastrellus monhysteroides present genitalia male female Onthophagus beetles horizontally during mating vertically passed to offspring oviposition. A previous indicates presence benefits larval development life history in a single host species, taurus . However, can be found association with variety species. replicate these experiments, assess whether beneficial extend other test nematode‐mediated differ between beetles. Rearing three distantly related species without nematodes, find body size, but not time or survival across all Likewise, no difference benefit compared These findings highlight role evolution ecology

Organisms are now seen as holobionts, consortia of several species that interact metabolically such they sustain and scaffold each other’s existence propagation. Sympoiesis, the development symbiotic relationships form is critical for our understanding origins maintenance biodiversity. Rather than being read-out a single genome, has been found to be sympoietic, based on multigenomic interactions between zygote-derived cells microbes. These sympoietic predicated ability from different kingdoms life (e.g., bacteria animals) communicate with one another have their chemical signals interpreted in manner facilitates development. creation an entity by other entities, commonly embryogenesis lenses retinas through interaction brain epidermal compartments). In holobiont sympoiesis, partners domains organs biofilms, wherein these acts environment other. If evolution forged changes development, if symbionts routinely involved then sympoiesis can constitute important factor evolution.

Species translocations are increasingly being used in conservation and for biological control.
