The oxygen consumption of adult fish (Q) is proportional to their body weight (W) raised a power, estimated as the slope (dQ) linear regression log(Q) vs. log(W). Similarly, gill surface area (GSA) W power dG, also via log-log area. Moreover, because Fick’s laws diffusion, dQ should be at least similar dG. Recently, claim has been made that non-zero differences between and dG invalidate Gill-Oxygen Limitation Theory (GOLT), which suggests O2 supplied by gills growing with <1 limits growth older larger fish. We show here, based on 33 pairs in species other information (i) while individual are observed several cases, there no significant overall difference across estimates (ii) large primarily due ontogenetic changes scaling (OCS), likely gills’ water–blood (or ‘diffusion’) distance and, well, multiple sources experimental variability potential errors, leading outliers random differences.

Journal of Experimental Biology has recently published a number studies that critically discussed the Gill-Oxygen Limitation Theory (GOLT, see Pauly, 2021), and Lonthair et al. (2024) is latest contribution to current debate. We welcome increasing interest in this theory, especially by physiologists who examine link between temperatures growth fishes. However, testing theory must be based on its actual premises hypotheses, we have conclude model does not correspond any GOLT's assumptions instead, results are entirely predicted as show here.As find, higher reduce Arctic char (Salvelinus fontinalis) while increase gill surface area metabolic rate scale with similar slopes. The authors interpret observation contradictory GOLT. similarity slopes actually an inherent component GOLT, explicitly stated (Pauly, 2019, 2021).Central arguments presented parameter introduced Scheuffele (2021), which these believe derived from GOLT: bS, i.e. difference scaling exponents (bMR) (bGSA). Instead, consistent equilibrium indeed challenge validity GOLT.Furthermore, put forth suggests implies fish continue grow until their vital functions verge collapse due oxygen limitation, biologically implausible. ABSTRACT The magnitude of many kinds biological structures and processes scale with organismal size, often in regular ways that can be described by power functions. Traditionally, these “biological scaling” relationships have been explained based on internal geometric, physical, energetic constraints according to universal natural laws, such as the “surface law” “3/4‐power law”. However, during last three decades it has become increasingly apparent scaling vary greatly response various external (environmental) factors. In this review, I propose provide several lines evidence supporting a new ecological perspective call “mortality theory ecology” (MorTE). According viewpoint, mortality imposes time limits growth, development, reproduction organisms. Accordingly, small, vulnerable organisms subject high due predation other environmental hazards evolved faster, shorter lives than larger, more protected A MorTE also includes corollary, size‐related causative factors (e.g. intraspecific resource competition, geometric surface area volume effects supply/transport protection tissues from hazards, homeostatic regulatory systems, incidence pathogens parasites, etc.) impact life. mortality‐centred approach successfully predicts ranges body‐mass slopes observed for traits. Furthermore, argue rate should considered ultimate (evolutionary) driver life, is expressed context proximate (functional) drivers information‐based regulation spatial (geometric) (metabolic) constraints.

Mechanistic explanations of the impact climate change on fish growth are currently under debate. However, critical assessments even most prominent theories not always based accurate interpretations their underlying mechanistic models. This contribution addresses some major misunderstandings still causing Gill-Oxygen Limitation Theory (GOLT) from being examined its actual structuring elements and assumptions, rather than erroneous perceptions. As we argue, recent critiques GOLT implausible respirometry data that invoked to distinguish maintenance costs overhead growth. Discussing current state debate, emphasize fact fasting young and, thus, growing for short periods time is sufficient suppress energy (i.e., oxygen) allocation In process dealing with these issues, several cases apparent ‘counter-evidence’ discussed. Highlighting need base discussions examinations predictions, recommend testing theory should focus broad reviews or meta-analyses, e.g., datasets gill surface area relationship performance different temperature regimes.
