Abstract By increasing the mean and variance of environmental temperatures, climate change has caused local extinctions range shifts that are likely to intensify over time. Previously, biologists projected impacts from acute heat tolerances adult organisms; however, this approach ignores important factors, such as cumulative damage exposure variation in tolerance among individuals different physical conditions at life stages. We measured effects hydration state stage on an agricultural pest, South American locust ( Schistocerca cancellata ). measuring time across a we estimated both chronic exposures high temperatures. then used these data model injury survival locusts microclimates past (1961–1990), present (1991–2020) future (uniform warming 3°C). Locusts succumbed stress exponentially faster temperature increased, but altered exponential relationship. Our modelling indicated recent amplified risk overheating, with predicted depending strongly locust's access shade water. If changes land use reduce availability resources, populations may shift their geographic than currently predicted. To accurately predict associated crop losses, mechanistic models distributions should consider combined stressors dehydration. Read free Plain Language Summary for article Journal blog.
