At the 2023 European Respiratory Society (ERS) International Congress, a significant part of scientific discussion revolved around asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), with multiple abstracts sessions dedicated to advances in targeted treatments, prevention, care plans for these patient groups. Clinical remission was one key topics severe (SA) sessions, focus on its definition, outcomes, perceptions. Additionally, biological their affected pathways, role helping patients achieve were central discussions. For COPD, much dialogue centred updated Global Initiative Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) guidelines, which classify according number exacerbations, dyspnoea, functional assessment, suggest personalised treatment. Such treatments numerous talks posters, as evidence is mounting use single inhaler triple therapy COPD ≥2 moderate exacerbations or ≥1 leading hospitalisation, positive impact symptoms quality life (QoL). Exacerbation prevention also notable topic, are more susceptible infections, often at higher risk complications, hospitalisations, death. Vaccination against vaccine-preventable diseases recommended cornerstone management respiratory patients, importance increasing awareness, access, uptake vaccines stressed.

Historically, all efforts against tuberculosis were focused on rapid diagnosis and effective treatment to break the chain of transmission Mycobacterium tuberculosis. However, in last few years, more evidence has been found dramatic consequences condition defined as post-tuberculosis lung disease (PTLD). Approximately one third patients surviving pulmonary face considerable ongoing morbidities, including respiratory impairment, psychosocial challenges, reduced health-related quality life after completion. Given important global local burden tuberculosis, well estimated PTLD, development a consensus document by Brazilian scientific society-Sociedade Brasileira de Pneumologia e Tisiologia (SBPT)-was considered urgent for prevention management this order allocate resources within services appropriately serve guide health care professionals. A team eleven pulmonologists methodologist was created SBPT review current PTLD develop recommendations adapted context. The expert panel selected topics basis international guidelines. During first phase, three members drafted recommendations, which divided into sections: definition prevalence assessment PTLD. In second reviewed, discussed, revised until reached. formally approved special session organized during 2023 Annual Conference.

Climate change and air pollution are pressing public health concerns, necessitating monitoring of their impact, particularly on respiratory diseases like obstructive lung diseases. This retrospective study analyzed medical records patients hospitalized at the Warmia Mazury Centre for Pulmonary Diseases in Olsztyn, Poland (2012–2021) asthma chronic pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbations. Data included meteorological factors such as temperature, humidity, wind speed, precipitation, levels PM2.5 PM10. The Humidex was utilized to assess thermal discomfort, considering various seasons. Findings indicated seasonal variability COPD During winter, poorer quality due higher PM10 correlated with increased exacerbations (r = 0.283, p < 0.05; r 0.491, 0.001). In summer, discomfort from conditions led more hospital admissions. values strongly admissions (R2 0.956 asthma; R2 0.659 COPD), July August showing statistically admission rates (p 0.05). highlights significant impact COPD, serving a valuable predictor during summer months.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbations are major contributors to morbidity and mortality, highlighting the need better understand their molecular mechanisms improve prevention, diagnosis, treatment. This study investigated differential gene expression profiles key biological processes in COPD categorized based on sputum microbiome profiling. An observational was performed a cohort of 16 patients, who provided blood samples during exacerbations, along with five stable-state as controls. Exacerbations were classified using 16S rRNA sequencing analyze microbiota multiplex PCR detect respiratory viruses. Blood transcriptomic profiling conducted Oxford Nanopore technology, followed by pathway enrichment analyses. A total 768 regulated genes identified across exacerbation groups, 35 shared associated neutrophil activation. Bacterial activated pathways related phagocytosis toll-like receptor signaling, while viral linked pro-inflammatory responses mitochondrial damage. unknown origin showed activation involved protozoan defense neutrophilic asthma. Biomarkers such IFITM3 ISG15 for bacterial DEFA3 viral, CD47 unknown-origin identified. These findings highlight distinct emphasizing central role neutrophil-driven inflammation identifying potential biomarkers improved diagnosis personalized management.
