There are no reports of cancer in sponges, despite them having somatic cell turnover, long lifespans, and specialized adaptive immune cells. In order to investigate whether sponges resistant, we exposed a species sponge, Tethya wilhelma, X-rays. We found that T. wilhelma can withstand 518 Gy X-ray radiation. That is approximately 100 times the lethal dose for humans. A single high X-rays did not induce providing first experimental evidence resistance phylum Porifera. Following exposure, an overexpression genes involved DNA repair, signaling transduction pathways, epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition. has highest level radiation yet been observed animals have sustained turnover. This may make excellent model system studying developing new approaches prevention treatment.
