Organizations often claim that their actions benefit others, for example in social impact initiatives, eliciting positive legitimacy evaluations from a broad range of audiences even though such initiatives may produce limited or harmful effects on target beneficiaries. While scholars have begun to examine relational dynamics between organizations and evaluators who render judgments about organizational legitimacy, beneficiaries been typically considered as the passive recipients negative impacts actions. Drawing qualitative data corporate responsibility project Kenya, this study reveals triadic relationship (organization–evaluators–target beneficiaries) establishes eyes while generating substantive benefits Far being passive, actively participated legitimation process by corroborating, communications with evaluators, organization’s claims. This corroboration provided leverage negotiate support order them redirect off-the-shelf practices toward contextualized generated themselves. Going beyond organization–evaluator dyad, contributes perspective how beneficiaries’ participation can reshape processes outcomes creation.
