Abstract Ocean acidification describes the decline in pH of marine environments as they continue to absorb anthropogenically-derived carbon dioxide (CO2). Research over past ~15 years has reported that levels ocean forecasted for end century (CO2 ~800–1000 µatm; ~7.6–7.7) can severely impair behaviours animals, including fishes and invertebrates. Impaired most concern are those linked with neural sensory systems, such capacity respond appropriately predators. However, after an initial proliferation studies reporting dire behavioural disturbances, finding negligible effects end-of-century began accumulate. We have now reached a point where there is little consensus on whether, how much, will impact animal behaviour. Here, we outline existing knowledge regarding behaviour, discuss chronology discoveries controversies field, provide guidance improving rigour transparency ecology more broadly.

The recently described decline effect in ocean acidification impacts on fish behaviour should not be equated with negligible effects. Here, existing mechanistic data are used to argue for continued research and cautions against "throwing the baby out bathwater."

Abstract Data visualization is crucial for effectively communicating knowledge in meta-analysis. However, existing methods meta-analysis have predominantly focused on quantitative aspects, such as forest plots and funnel plots, thereby neglecting qualitative information that equally important end-users science, policy, practice. We introduce a framework consisting of series toolkits designed to enrich meta-analyses by borrowing approaches from other research synthesis methods, including systematic evidence mapping (scoping reviews), bibliometrics (bibliometric analysis), alternative impact metric analysis. These “enrichment” aim facilitate the both evidence, along with assessment academic nonacademic influences meta-analytic base. While yields insights, enrichment analyses, visualizations provide user-friendly summaries For example, map can visualize study characteristics, unraveling gaps methodological differences. Bibliometric analysis offers visual nonindependent hyper-dominant authors countries, funding sources, potentially informing risk bias.
