People need to often switch attention between external and internal sources of information, i.e., attention, respectively. There has been a recent surge research interest in this type attentional flexibility, which revealed that it is characterized by an asymmetrical cost, being larger for switching toward than attention. One potential explanation cost asymmetry terms shielding, the maintenance stable against interference. However, currently unclear how instantiated brain information might be shielded from input during switches. In study, we instructed participants repeat or them trial trial, while simultaneously recording 64-channel EEG. At behavioral level, replicated asymmetry. Our ERP analysis provided evidence three different processing stages. First, prepared more strongly upcoming selection, as reflected increased CNV component. Second, trials, moreover showed blunted sensory response, most notable P1 N1 components, reflecting perceptual decoupling. Finally, found P2 component when compared repeating it, indicating decoupling on repetition line with shielding. We integrate these findings here accounts conclude provides mechanism shielding benefit

Most everyday tasks require shifting the focus of attention between sensory signals in external environment and internal contents working memory. To date, shifts have been investigated within each domain, but domain remain poorly understood. We developed a combined perception working-memory task to investigate compare consequences spatial domains service common orientation-reproduction task. Participants were sequentially cued attend items either memory or an upcoming stimulation. Stay trials provided baseline condition, while shift required participants their another item same different domain. Validating our experimental approach, we found evidence that shifted effectively (Experiment 1). In addition, observed greater costs when transitioning as compared (Experiments 1, 2). Strikingly, these persisted even given more time complete attentional Biases fixational gaze behaviour tracked orienting both domains, revealed no latency magnitude difference for within- versus between-domain Collectively, results from Experiments 1 2 suggest might be regulated by unique control function. Our break new ground exploring ubiquitous act guide adaptive cognition.

Perception integrates external sensory signals with internal predictions that reflect prior knowledge about the world. Previous research suggests this integration is governed by slow alternations between an mode, driven signals, and shaped knowledge. Using a double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over experiment in healthy human participants, we investigated effects of N-Methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) antagonist S-ketamine on balance modes. We found causes shift perception toward mode. A case-control study revealed individuals paranoid Scz, disorder repeatedly associated NMDAR hypofunction, spend more time This NMDAR-dependent increase mode symptoms schizophrenia are caused recurring dissociations from

Abstract Predictions of future events have a major impact on how we process sensory signals. However, it remains unclear the brain keeps predictions online in anticipation inputs. Here, combined magnetoencephalography (MEG) and multivariate decoding techniques to investigate content perceptual their frequency characteristics. Participants were engaged shape discrimination task, while auditory cues predicted which specific would likely appear. Frequency analysis revealed significant oscillatory fluctuations representations pre-stimulus window alpha band (10 – 11Hz). Furthermore, found that this stimulus-specific power was linked expectation effects discrimination. Our findings demonstrate are embedded oscillations modulate subsequent performance, providing neural mechanism through deploys predictions.

Perception alternates between an external mode, driven by sensory inputs, and internal shaped prior knowledge. We found that the mode is more prevalent during pharmacologically induced N-Methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) hypofunction in schizophrenia. This NMDAR-dependent increase suggests psychotic experiences are caused recurring dissociations of perception from knowledge about world.
