Plants are diverse, but investigating their ecology and evolution in nature across geographic temporal scales to predict how species will respond global change is challenging. With breadth, herbarium data provide physical evidence of the existence a place time. The remarkable size collections along with growing digitization efforts around world possibility extracting functional traits from preserved plant specimens makes them invaluable resources for advancing our understanding changing distributions over time, biogeography, conserving communities. Here, I synthesize core aspects biogeography that can be gleaned herbaria distributions, attributes (functional biogeography), conservation globe. advocate collaborative, multisite, multispecies research harness full potential these while addressing inherent challenges using macroecological investigations. Ultimately, present untapped opportunities enable predictions species' responses inform effective planning.

ABSTRACT Realizing coexistence between humans and tigers is an important initiative of tiger recovery in the world. To define priority management areas (PMAs) to mitigate human–tiger conflict (HTC) Laoyeling, where 90% China's Amur population living, we analyzed distribution habitat HTC risk, delineated PMAs for mitigation. The results indicated that 26.77% (1851 km 2 ) Laoyeling most suitable tiger. high‐risk area covers 1173 , which 413 Among six PMAs, 374 1398 are located outside protected need strengthen conservation management. Our research can contribute improving effectiveness promoting China.

Forests are critical ecosystems that regulate climate, preserve biodiversity, and support human livelihoods by providing essential resources. However, they increasingly vulnerable due to the growing impacts of deforestation habitat fragmentation, which endanger their value long-term sustainability. Assessing forest fragmentation is vital for promoting sustainable logging, guiding ecosystem restoration, biodiversity conservation. This study introduces an advanced approach integrates Local Connected Fractal Dimension (LCFD) with near real-time (NRT) land use cover (LULC) data from Dynamic World dataset (2017–2024) enhance monitoring landscape analysis. By leveraging high-frequency, high-resolution satellite imagery imaging techniques, this method employs two fractal indices, namely Fragmentation Index (FFI) Disorder (FFDI), analyze spatiotemporal changes in monitoring, a dynamic, quantitative assessing connectivity real time. LCFD provides refined assessment spatial complexity, localized connectivity, self-similarity fragmented landscapes, improving understanding dynamics. Applied Nigeria’s Okomu Forest, analysis revealed significant transformations, peak observed 2018 substantial recovery 2019. FFI FFDI metrics indicated heightened disturbances 2018, increasing 75.2% non-deforested areas 61.1% deforested before experiencing rapid declines 2019 (82.6% 87%, respectively), suggesting improved connectivity. Despite minor fluctuations, cumulative trends showed 160.5% rise 2017 2024, reflecting stabilization. patterns highlighted persistent variability, recovering 12% 2024 after 38% reduction These findings reveal complex interplay between recovery, emphasizing need targeted conservation strategies ecological resilience indices offer potential generate valuable insights across multiple scales, thereby informing preservation adaptive management.

In December 2022, 196 countries adopted the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework under Convention on Biological Diversity. The outlines four ambitious global goals and 23 targets for world to address loss of biodiversity more sustainable use natural resources. One those targets—Target 3—commits achieving protection at least 30% terrestrial inland water areas marine coastal by 2030 (the “30 × 30 target”). This is one largest conservation commitments that around have made. Prior signing Framework, a survey residents in seven (Australia, Barbados, Colombia, Germany, Kenya, Mongolia, USA) was conducted understand their level awareness gauge support target. surveyed late strong majority respondents each country rated target favorably were likely government making it. only multi-country pre-Global provides useful baseline track changes opinion over time.

Abstract Earth has >8 billion people. Scholarly publications number nearly 7 million annually with >1 in the life and biomedical sciences, ≥52 professional journals specializing conservation, ecology, or related disciplines. The challenges of applying ecological data to conservation wildlife management can easily become overwhelming. Herein we offer reflective perspectives about changing face applied knowledge engagement from our personal employment histories as ecologists working agency, university, non‐governmental organization (NGO) biologist positions. We suggest natural history will always be nature's glue, but steeped mostly muddy boots field biology are no longer soup du jour profession. In many ways, new technologies have changed collection scientific questions asked. Arguably, such change is not welcomed by all, a overlap across decades needed sustain improve upon how planet's biological diversity coexist increasingly difficult human conditions. Given that 80% people United States live urban areas, similar numbers internationally, future possibility may an even greater divide between wild nature, services, enjoyment field. This disturbing. Despite fundamental insights help understand critical components world, once society loses touch what remain?
