Despite the urgency imposed by current biodiversity crisis, many species remain undescribed, facing extinction before their formal recognition science. Accelerating descriptions is thus imperative. However, should be robust and based on good taxonomic practice, which may enhance long-term nomenclatural stability that crucial for scientific research conservation planning. Yet, few studies have assessed robustness of description. Here, we evaluated temporal trends in nearly 4,000 squamate reptiles spanning more than three decades (from 1990 to 2023). We observed an average increase about 115% number lines evidence used descriptions, such as pholidosis, morphometrics, genes sequenced molecular analysis. Type-series size decreased half lizards but remained roughly constant snakes, while page length dedicated showed upward trajectory both taxa, increasing 42.7% over time. Furthermore, our study highlights positive correlation between (i.e. measured provided, type-series size, pages) reviews, well impact collaborative efforts, with authors associated greater pages. Overall, become thorough recent decades. The proportion included analysis has grown time, all described annually years having data. hundreds new reptile being annually, potential invalidation future jeopardise efforts. Therefore, thorough, accurate are important addressing crisis providing reliable data analyses

Tetrapods (amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals) are model systems for global biodiversity science, but continuing data gaps, limited standardisation, ongoing flux in taxonomic nomenclature constrain integrative research on this group potentially cause biased inference. We combined harmonised taxonomic, spatial, phylogenetic, attribute with phylogeny-based multiple imputation to provide a comprehensive resource (TetrapodTraits 1.0.0) that includes values, predictions, sources body size, activity time, micro- macrohabitat, ecosystem, threat status, biogeography, insularity, environmental preferences, human influence, all 33,281 tetrapod species covered recent fully sampled phylogenies. assess gaps biases across taxa space, finding shared missing values increased taxon-level completeness richness clades. Prediction of using revealed substantial changes estimated macroecological patterns. These results highlight incurred by nonrandom missingness strategies best address them. While there is an obvious need further collection updates, our phylogeny-informed database traits can support more representation their attributes ecology, evolution, conservation research.

Functional traits differ among species, which determine the ecological niche a species occupies and its ability to adapt environment. However, differences in also exist at intraspecific level. Such variations shape individual survival capabilities. Investigating of functional is important for ecology, evolutionary biology biodiversity conservation. Individual trait-based approaches have been applied plant ecology. But animals, most databases only provide data In this study, we presented global database morphological caecilians (Amphibia, Gymnophiona) both Caecilians are unique group amphibians characterized by their secretive habits, limited our understanding taxon. We compiled comprehensive covering 218 out 222 known with 215 them level data. This will facilitate research biology, conservation taxonomy caecilians. Furthermore, dataset can be utilized test hypotheses

Most described species have not been explicitly included in phylogenetic trees-a problem named the Darwinian shortfall-owing to a lack of molecular and/or morphological data, thus hampering explicit incorporation evolution into large-scale biodiversity analyses. We investigate potential drivers shortfall tetrapods, group which at least one-third still necessitating imputation their evolutionary relationships fully sampled phylogenies. show that number preserved specimens scientific collections is main driver knowledge accumulation, highlighting major role biological unveiling novel data and importance continued sampling efforts reduce gaps. Additionally, large-bodied wide-ranged species, as well terrestrial aquatic amphibians reptiles, are phylogenetically better known. Future should prioritize research on organisms narrow-ranged, small-bodied underrepresented collections, such fossorial species. Addressing will be imperative for advancing our understanding shaping patterns implementing comprehensive conservation strategies.

ABSTRACT Motivation Human activities have been reshaping the natural world for tens of thousands years, leading to extinction hundreds bird species. Past research has provided evidence selectivity towards certain groups species, but trait information is lacking majority clades, especially prehistoric extinctions identified only through subfossil remains. This incomplete knowledge potentially obscures structure communities, undermining our ability infer changes in biodiversity across space and time, including trends functional phylogenetic diversity. Biases currently available data also limit identify drivers processes extinction. Here we present AVOTREX, an open‐access database species traits all birds known gone extinct last 130,000 years. provides detailed morphological 610 along with a pipeline build trees that include these Main Types Variables Contained For each provide on taxonomy, geographic location, period We island endemicity, flight ability, body mass, as well standard measurements external (matching AVONET extant birds) skeletal morphology from museum specimens where available. Examining closely related species evolving in similar environments offers valuable insights into the mechanisms driving phylogenetic conservatism and evolutionary lability. This can elucidate intricate relationship between inheritance environmental factors. Nonetheless, precise genomic dynamics molecular underpinnings of this process remain enigmatic. study explores adaptation exhibited by two high-altitude frog species: Nanorana parkeri N. pleskei. We assembled a high-quality genome for Tibetan pleskei compared it to genomes their lowland relatives. Our findings reveal that these diverged approximately 16.6 million years ago, pointing possible ancestral colonization high-elevation habitats.
