Interdisciplinary perspectives on multimorbidity in Africa: Developing an expanded conceptual model

Multimorbidity
is
an
emerging
challenge
for
health
systems
globally.
It
commonly
defined
as
the
co-occurrence
of
two
or
more
chronic
conditions
in
one
person,
but
its
meaning
remains
a
lively
area
academic
debate,
and
utility
concept
beyond
high-income
settings
uncertain.
This
article
presents
findings
from
interdisciplinary
research
initiative
that
drew
together
60
applied
partners
working
10
African
countries
to
answer
questions:
how
useful
multimorbidity
within
Africa?
Can
be
adapted
context
optimise
transformative
potentials?
During
three-day
concept-building
workshop,
we
investigated
definition
was
understood
across
diverse
disciplinary
regional
perspectives,
evaluated
limitations
existing
concepts
definitions,
considered
build
context-sensitive,
cross-cutting
description
multimorbidity.
iterative
process
guided
by
principles
grounded
theory
involved
focus-
whole-group
discussions
during
thematic
coding
workshop
discussions,
further
post-workshop
development
refinement.
Three
domains
emerged
discussions:
current
focus
on
constituent
diseases;
potential
revised
centre
priorities,
needs,
social
people
living
with
(PLWMM);
need
respond
varied
conceptual
priorities
amongst
stakeholders.
These
themes
fed
into
expanded
model
centres
catastrophic
impacts
can
have
PLWMM,
families
support
structures,
service
providers,
systems.

Purpose
of
review
There
are
few
studies
investigating
the
effects
urbanization
on
various
anxiety-related
conditions
in
specific
population
subgroups.
This
aims
to
examine
through

subgroups

disorder
subtypes.

consistent
evidence
suggesting
that

Cross-National variations in mental health: A cross-sectional study on depression, anxiety, and stress among university staff and students in Sub-Saharan African

Mental
health
disorders
are
global
concerns,
but
their
impact
varies
across
regions.
In
sub-Saharan
Africa
(SSA),
the
influence
of
country-specific
factors
on
mental
is
under-researched.
This
study
investigates
country
origin
prevalence
and
severity
conditions
among
university
students
staff
select
SSA
countries.
A
cross-sectional,
web-based
survey
using
Depression,
Anxiety,
Stress
Scale-21
(DASS-21)
was
conducted
from
16
April
to
18
November
2024.
The
distributed
online

multiple
African
social
networks,
reaching
different
universities

Prevalence
estimates
for
anxiety,
depression,
stress
were
based
binomial
distribution
with
Clopper-Pearson
confidence
intervals,

country-level
differences

univariate
odds

regression.

3221
participants,
aged
25.3

8.6
(mean±SD),
majority
(1850,
57.3%)
females.
Findings
revealed
that
Nigerians
reported
highest
severe
extremely
conditions,
Ghanaians
recorded
lowest
levels
all
categories.
