Coral assisted fertilization, larval rearing and recruit propagation success in significant ecological scales, largely depend on scaling up replicating these efforts as many regions possible. The Dominican Foundation for Marine Studies (FUNDEMAR) has become a pioneer of the Republic, being first institution to successfully implement coral sexual reproduction techniques country establishing mobile larvae culturing facility. Here we share our perspective three main components behind FUNDEMAR’s program: (1) self-sustainable program alliance with local international organizations, (2) design construction Assisted Reproduction Laboratory country, (3) clearly defined scalable structure outcome performance. Two years after implementation, FUNDEMAR produced an annual regional spawning prediction calendar, cultured seven species, seeded over 4,500 substrates more than 268,200 recruits approximately 1,880 m 2 reef areas. Here, provide detailed description fully functional program, including lessons learned during its implementation well series specific solutions. We hope this work will help inspire other countries small institutions replicate contribute expansion restoration Caribbean.

In the present age of technological advancement, nanotechnology and its associated applications have been able to gain attention because their ability create a revolution in field modern science. There is no denying fact that nanomaterials synthesized by different methods, especially bio-synthesized ones, provided numerous benefits mankind fields like agriculture, medicine, industry, manufacturing etc. as they possess distinctive properties. Their size, surface characteristics chemical composition are major factors which contribute wide range applications, while these same properties responsible for toxic hazardous effects. The review tries bridge an existing gap literature – huge no. research material available advancements nanomaterials, paving path future this area, yet very limited information on possible toxicity living forms (plants, animals, humans alike) well environment. This acknowledges tremendous advantages positive effects metal-based 1nanoparticles (NPs) plants, but highlights phytotoxic some most widely used NPs globally viz. ZnO NPs, TiO2 AgNPs. Lastly, emphasis has laid adverse environmental conditions (soil aquatic environment) ecological topography.

Reversing coral reef decline requires reducing environmental threats while actively restoring ecological structure and function. A promising restoration approach uses breeding to boost natural recruitment repopulate reefs with genetically diverse communities. Recent advances in predicting spawning, capturing spawn, culturing larvae, rearing settlers have enabled the successful propagation, settlement, outplanting of offspring all world's major regions. Nevertheless, efforts frequently yield low survival, reflecting type III survivorship curve corals poor condition most targeted for restoration. Furthermore, programs are still limited spatial scale species diversity. Here, we highlight four priority areas research cooperative innovation increase effectiveness restoration: (1) expanding number sites species, (2) improving broodstock selection maximize genetic diversity adaptive capacity restored populations, (3) enhancing culture conditions improve health before after outplanting, (4) scaling up infrastructure technologies large‐scale Prioritizing these will enable practitioners address at relevant scales, re‐establish self‐sustaining ensure long‐term success interventions. Overall, aim guide community toward actions opportunities that can rapid technical larval breeding, foster interdisciplinary collaborations, ultimately achieve reefs.

Marine ecosystem restoration success stories are needed to incentivize society and private enterprises build capacity stimulate investments. Yet, we still must demonstrate that efforts can effectively contribute achieving the targets set by UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. Here, conduct a meta-analysis 764 active interventions across wide range of marine habitats worldwide. We show restorations have an average ~64% they are: viable for large variety habitats, including deep-sea ecosystems; highly successful saltmarshes, tropical coral reefs habitat-forming species such as animal forests; at all spatial scales, so over scales be done using multiple small-spatial better represent natural variability, scalable through dedicated policies, regulations, financing instruments. Restoration were surprisingly effective even in areas where human impacts persisted, demonstrating initiated before stressors been removed. These results immediate feasibility global 'blue restoration' plan ecosystems, enabled increasing availability new cost-effective technologies. This study evaluated descriptive statistical comparison, formal conducted interventions, mixed model based spectrum survival data reported reviewed literature.

Coastal wetlands restoration is an emerging field which aims to recover the ecological characteristics of degraded ecosystems natural ones. Coral reef restoration is a rapidly growing movement galvanized by the accelerating degradation of world's tropical coral reefs. The need for concerted and collaborative action focused on recovery ecosystems coalesced in creation Restoration Consortium (CRC) 2017. In March 2020, CRC leadership team met biennial review international efforts discussion perceived knowledge implementation bottlenecks that may impair scalability efficacy. Herein we present six priorities wherein will foster scientific advancement collaboration to: (1) increase efficiency, focusing scale cost‐effectiveness deployment; (2) up larval‐based efforts, emphasizing recruit health, growth, survival; (3) ensure threatened species proceeds within population‐genetics management context; (4) support holistic approach to ecosystem restoration; (5) develop promote use standardized terms metrics (6) practitioners working diverse geographic locations. These are not exhaustive nor do imply accomplishing these tasks alone be sufficient restore reefs globally; rather topics where feel community practice can make timely significant contributions facilitate growth as practical conservation strategy. goal collective actions provide tangible, local‐scale advancements condition offset declines resulting from local global stressors including climate change.

Abstract Climate-related risks in Central and South America have received increased attention concern science policy, but an up-to-date comprehensive review synthesis of adaptation potential is currently missing. For this paper we evaluated over 200 peer-reviewed articles grey literature documents published since 2012. We found that climate change during the 21st century may increase risk to severe levels for following topical clusters: (a) Food insecurity; (b) Floods landslides; (c) Water scarcity; (d) Epidemics vector-borne diseases; (e) Amazon Forest biome shift; (f). Coral bleaching; (g) Coastal sea level rise, storm surges erosion; (h) Systemic failure due cascading impacts hazards epidemics. Our also identified feasible measures each risk. The will be heterogeneous throughout region, with rural communities, Indigenous peoples, Afro-Latin Americans, women, disabled people, migrants as being most severely affected. refer a number options However, unabated together low adaptive capacity strictly limit options. Immediate strengthening policies building research on risk-adaptation nexus are paramount. findings might contribute guide adjustment emphasis management strategies from local national level.

Coral reef restoration activity is accelerating worldwide in efforts to offset the rate of health declines. Many advances have already been made practices centred on coral biology (coral restoration), and particularly those that look employ high adaptive state capacity corals order ensure rebuilding biomass also equip reefs with enhanced resilience future stress. We horizon scan state-of-play for many innovations underway across complex life cycle spans both asexual sexual reproduction — assisted evolution (manipulations targeted host host-associated microbes), biobanking, as well scalable propagation planting how these are different stages maturity support new 21st century management frameworks. Realising potential tools aids undoubtedly rests validating approaches their application continues scale. Whilst ecosystem service responses increased scaling still largely remain be seen, has delivered immense understanding coral-associated microbial long lagged behind other sciences.
