Age-adjusted suicide rates declined from 2018 to 2020. However, among older adults, particularly males 75 and older, have continued rise, the evidence base for effective interventions prevent in late life remains limited. One strategy adults’ suicidal behavior is intervene when they reveal intent. Previous research found that a significant proportion of decedents disclosed their intent close fatal incident. In this study, based on 2017–2019 United States National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) data, we examined: (1) correlates disclosure three age groups (65–74, 75–84, 85+) ( N = 17,917; 14,856 men 3,061 women); (2) associations means with contributing factors. The results show 19.9% all aged 65+ (18.7%, 21.0%, 22.0% 65–74, 85+ groups, respectively) partner, family/friends, healthcare providers within month death. Multivariable analyses using generalized linear models Poisson distribution log link showed physical mental health, substance misuse, addiction problems, relationship/other stressors were associated higher likelihood 65–74 75–84 groups. only health problems those 85 older. Intent was not firearms poisoning as but lower hanging or suffocation. Mental misuse odds suffocation poisoning, male sex group firearm use. Suicide prevention strategies who are at risk should include more patient-centered comfort palliative care, health/substance misuse/addiction treatment, restriction access potential means. More adults disclose late-life needed.

In this study based on the 2017–2019 National Violent Death Reporting System data, we examined prevalence of depression in female suicide decedents (N = 3,061), associations between and other precipitants, methods depression. Descriptive statistics generalized linear models (GLM) for a Poisson distribution with log link were used to examine questions. Of decedents, 15.0% had depressed mood without reported diagnosis 41.8% diagnosis. Nearly one-half receiving mental health/substance use treatment at time injury. The likelihood was lower those who age 85 compared 65–74, but higher anxiety disorder (IRR 1.50, 95% CI 1.33–1.69), history suicidal ideation 1.22, 1.10–1.35), attempt 1.27, 1.14–1.41), bereavement problems 1.45, 1.27–1.65). This generated a high level overlap concepts and terminology used to articulate how it might present, as well ‘grey area’ behavioural terms that are both specific older adults less well-defined ( e.g. ‘hastening death’ or ‘completed life’). Here, we adopted scoping review search systematically literature presentation, features, circumstances outcomes these grey areas life. Fifty-three articles (quantitative, qualitative theoretical) were reviewed. narrative approach was merge translate this knowledge into new conceptual framework based four key themes: (a) sense completed existential loneliness; (b) death thoughts, wishes ideation; (c) death-hastening behaviour advanced directives; (d) self-destructive self-injurious behaviour. We discuss importance integrating current prevention strategies for adults. Recommendations made unifying with policy themes healthy ageing, person-centredness within service provision citizen participation.
