Background. Suicide capability (fearlessness about death [FAD], preparation, and perceived [PC]) is presumed to be static, or increase with exposure provocative events. However, tests of this assumption have primarily used non-clinical samples. We examined short-term changes in among patients a partial hospital program. Methods. enrolled 296 adult (186 [62.7%] female; Mage=36.13, SDage=14.75) who completed diagnostic interviews questionnaires assessing demographics, capability, suicide ideation (SI) at intake. Capability was re-assessed twice during treatment again discharge, SI discharge. latent growth modeling (LGM) quantify capability. Results. FAD, PC decreased from intake discharge (ps<.001, ds=0.24-0.63) unconditional LGM models suggested that all facets changed significantly throughout treatment. FAD positively associated preparation (r=0.57) (r=0.25) (ps<.001), but did not predict other facets. Greater concurrently higher (βs=0.26-1.83, ps<.01) predicted steeper declines (β=-0.23) (β=-0.04), ps=.04. Finally, more severe (β=0.16, p<.001). Limitations. There no control group there unequal spacing between in-treatment assessments participants. Results for may been impacted by floor effects. Conclusions. suggest aspects can change over short time. Conceptually related together; thus, future investigations the dynamics should treat it as unitary construct.

Abstract Suicide is one of the leading causes death among individuals aged 10–24. Research using intensive longitudinal methods to identify near-term predictors suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs) has grown dramatically. Interpersonal factors may be particularly critical for suicide risk young people, given heightened salience interpersonal experiences during adolescence adulthood. We conducted a narrative review on studies investigating how contribute STBs adolescents adults. Thirty-two met inclusion criteria focused theoretical cross-theoretical factors. Negative states (e.g., perceived burdensomeness), hopelessness, social support were consistently associated with proximal within-person changes in concurrent, but not prospective, thoughts. Further, work examining these processes extend behavior diverse samples remains scarce. Implications contemporary theories people are discussed.

Abstract Objective Youth suicide, a major cause of death, is linked to poverty and other adverse experiences. Evidence its association with food insecurity unclear due inadequate controls for household income in previous research. This cross-sectional study used independent reports income, insecurity, suicidal behaviours examine these associations population-based sample. Methods The 2019 Canadian Health Survey on Children surveyed 6735 youth (15–17 years), gathering data sadness/hopelessness, ideation, suicide attempts. Adults provided information using multi-item scale about diagnosed mood disorders youth. Household were by government tax records. We Poisson regressions estimate the relative risk (RR) each behaviour attributed adjusting covariates. Results Approximately one five (19.8%) experienced marginal (5.2%), moderate (7.9%), or severe (3.3%) insecurity. Moderate was associated increased risks disorder, attempts (RRs 1.30–2.17) after controlling differences Generally, more positively behaviours. Conclusion behaviours, independently income. Suicide capability is a multidimensional concept that facilitates the movement from suicidal ideation to suicide attempt. The three-step theory of posits three overarching contributors comprise capability: acquired (fearlessness about death and high pain tolerance), dispositional (genetics), practical (knowledge access lethal means) capability. Although extensive research has investigated relationships between individual attempts, little considered how an individual’s for develops as combination contributors. Given multifaceted complex, our understanding development relatively limited. This potentially negatively impacts prevention capacity reduction–focused intervention efficacy. Therefore, this study aimed explore develops. Fourteen community-based attempt survivors were recruited using convenience sampling. Individual narratives collected open-ended interviews, data analysed narrative analysis. Results indicated participant contained two elements. first included facilitation often underpinned by relational interplay For example, participants without tolerance seeking methods perceived be painless. second element novel finding relating agentic role when deciding attempting suicide.
