Acheulean sites in southern Africa continue to play an important role understanding the evolution of Earlier Stone Age technology. While there are over fifty localities documented this region, contextual challenges often limit their potential develop well‐defined stratigraphic and chronological constraints. Despite this, recent trends research have emphasized importance examining site formation issues on both regional scales. Understanding where located African landscape provides insight into mobility patterns Early Middle Pleistocene hominin populations. Furthermore, studies using geometric morphometric methods analyze handaxes cleavers provided new avenues for illuminating sources variation size shape across temporal geographical boundaries. Continued expansion these focal areas will aid our ability understand how toolmakers adapted local landscapes Africa.

Abstract The area of the escarpment Angola between Namib and Huíla Province, about 150 km from Atlantic coast, yields abundant evidence for human activity throughout Stone Age. There is a high concentration open-air sites with stone tools classified as Early (ESA) Middle Age (MSA) by past explorers. At top plateau, Chela group rocks particularly Leba dolomites yield series caves fissures infilled deposits ranging Pleistocene to recent times. Considering, background information, new project was developed establish proxies, we set out revise this cultural landscape stage archaeological testing sites. In 2018–2019, our survey documented 45 including caves, rock shelters, locations fossil deposits, Later (LSA) artifacts, faunal remains, pottery, burials. A complete map distribution their underground topography presented. Active speleothems, important paleoclimatic reconstructions absolute dating, were found at Malola Tchivinguiro. Fossil occurrences relocated Tchíua Cangalongue. Our study shows there intense activity, historical use least three burial herding populations living Humpata plateau. field assessment potential pursue several lines reconstruct lifeways environments in region.

Abstract Southern African coastlines have been magnets for human settlement since the late Pleistocene. Evidence isolated or sporadic use (from 600 ka) and later recurrent access 160 to a variety of coastal resources in this subcontinent ranks among earliest world. While providing subsistence over millennia, seascapes were also likely sources deep cultural meaning that shaped lives groups. Developing conceptual models specifically making sense records is imperative because until now interior Kalahari ethnography has used inadequately do so. A specialized maritime adaptation technology (e.g., boats composite gear offshore fishing hunting) was never developed on southern Africa’s coasts, but most intense procurement consumption marine are evident during terminal Pleistocene Holocene context approaching higher population densities, respectively. unique case dietary specialization high–trophic level foods circumscribed Cape Robberg Peninsula part record. Sections coastline remain unexplored unpublished, finding additional west coast MSA sites dating periods other than Last Interglacial would allow comparison with more chronologically ecologically diverse sites. How groups interacted each hinterland largely unknown needs be addressed. Uncovering further variability record will demanding questions
